I was part of a singing contest this weekend. I did not expect to win and was in it for fun (I didn't even know it was a "contest" until a week before). The reason I didn't expect to win was simple. The voting was done by the volume level of the crowd and there were four male contestants and three female - and it was a club that serves alcohol.
This meant I didn't have a chance for the simple reason that men vote for the chicks, and women are a "sisterhood" in such a situation. That said, what happened was interesting, partly because halfway through the voting, the MC tried to "whoop up" parts of the crowd that didn't seem to be participating. I think that is a democrat thing - resurrect voters when needed. ;)
Contestants quality was as follows (and is our - and the table next to us - subjective opinion).
Male A - Good singer with good stage presence
Male B - Very good singer with fair stage presence
Male C - Medium singer with good stage presence.
Male D - Medium quality karaoke fare.
Female A - Good singer with good stage presence
Female B - Medium singer with a lot of whooping it up.
Female C - Bad karaoke skinny 50-ish woman going on 15 (my wife was embarrassed for her).
The winners?
1st place, Female A
2nd place, Female B
3rd place, Female C
After hearing everyone sing, it was exactly how I lined 'em up. Once you get the men out of the way, you can focus on actual talent, or lack thereof.
I love watching Idol. I'm hooked and I admit it.
Ummm...
You seem to be operating under the delusion that AI is a pure singing contest, designed to be a fair an open way to determine the best singer.
It's not. It never has been.
The voting system is set up the way it is precisely because that's what the producers want -- the people who are flooding the phones and text messages are the ones who are going to buy albums. It's about selling records, not finding great singers.
Personally, I do think Sanjaya has long overstayed his ability, but let's not kid ourselves on the other contestants voted off -- Sundance peaked during his audition and has gotten steadily worse. The week before this one, he had a song that was in his "wheelhouse", the coverted "pimp slot" of going last, and he turned in an OK performance when he needed to blow the roof off. Is he better than Sanjaya? Yes. But his departure is no loss to the competition.
Frankly, the fact that the annoying fake "R&B" style of Taylor Hicks actually won last year should be a better indicator that the show is "broken".
Can't believe people get upset about this ... IT'S A TV SHOW. There's a website called votefortheworst.com, they were encouraging their followers to vote for the Indian guy. It all doesn't matter anyway, because we all know right now who will be the top six and even the top four. The difference between the good singers and the others is light years. So, they got their faces on TV, it's the high moment of their lives and that be that.
I feel bad for Sanjaya. He has a nice voice...he can stay on pitch...he probably does some good karaoke. But he's not a "singer." The judges should blame themselves, they picked him.
Have a nice day...
American Idol has never actually been a singing competition. It's a "who can prove an ability to sell many many copies of their first album" competition. And yes it only extends as far as the first album, because by the time the second album comes out somebody else will have gotten all the "free" (free to the competitor, not to the record company that will make all the money) exposure of the next American Idol. Sure they like to say it's a signing competition, Home Depot likes to say they have tons of helpful staff wandering around the store, neither is true.
Good morning, jonrick46. Thank you! I'll give it a whirl. :)
Just focus on the fact that none of the people who were actually voted off last night had any chance of winning the show regardless of the outcome last night.
Do your daughters see how he comes off as gay? Or is that a totally foreign idea to them? Do they think it's at all odd that his hair is styled like it is? How do people other than your girls view him at school?
Good questions. Stay tuned.
You called my a DU'er. I have never been on that site. Obviously you have. I have no idea what a liberal is although I can spell it something you lack very much (spelling). You might have signed up years ago, but haven't learned much apparently. I don't understand how you can be so pro-homosexual and want all these wonderful stars to come out. I just don't understand it. Funny and you call me a liberal. Why don't you just write Sanjaya a letter and ask him if he is gay since you are so interested in knowing this information (something a true conservative would not have any interest or give a care) with him and his potential gayness. While your at it you mentioned Richard Simmons as one of your mystery hopes. Again write a letter. Maybe your dreams will come true. Have a nice day to you too....oh and weekend.
Now get with the program! buh-by.
I agree with you on this. Let's just get back to the thread. I am pissed that Sanjaya is on the show bottom line. See ya. I with the program now! lol. Have a great weekend. Call it a lapse of intelligence for the last couple posts. lol.
Maybe Sanjaya got Michael's old nose.
Well, you know somethings up when you can sing a Michael Jackson song better than Michael Jackson.
I cant understand onething.
Why so much outrage against Sanjaya, while not even a fraction of it was directed against Kevin Covais ?
Afterall, he too was young, talentless and made it to the top 12.
People merely "dismissed" him as a cute boy with an "awww" factor.
For Sanjaya, its apparently a different deal.... I wonder why.
