Start of New Film '300' Disses Our Troops

Posted on 03/08/2007 3:20:55 AM PST by goresalooza

Scottish star Gerard Butler, lead actor in the highly anticipated film opening March 9, has revealed to Esquire Magazine that U.S. troops in Iraq are not heroic. Here's the quote from the magazine, Mar/April 2007 issue:

Esquire: "In the movie, a small band of proto-democratic freedom fighters take on a Middle Eastern enemy -- did you discuss parallels with contemporary world politics?"

Gerard Butler: "300 was sold to me one way: The Spartans are the U.S. But I think if you look at it with half a brain, then you see that the situation is absolutely reversed. I've really got to be careful what I say here. [Director] Zach [Snyder] and I never tried to compare it to politics, because, to be honest, that doesn't work for me. I mean [the Iraq war] is such a *beep* It is a mess. Who are the heroes there? There are no heroes. It's all just dirty."

Please fix typo in headline: "Star" for "Start"

This is why actors have scripts.

Somebody else has to tell them what to say because they are incapable of critical analysis themselves.

I'm with you. I've seen too many clips of this movies to not go now.

In another article, one of the producers was darn near pro-American

Well it's too bad he opened his lefty mouth. Frank Miller on the other hand is quite the opposite of this brain dead actor. The actor's already been paid, but Miller won't get his full amount until later.. And Frank Miller is pro-USA so I'm going.

This is true. When I was in the Air Force, we used to say,

"You can teach a monkey to fly an airplane, but you can't teach one to work on 'em."

Salutes and nods to the hardworking maintenance folks on US Air Force flightlines around the world! AIM HIGH!

I was looking forward to this movie....I am (or was) a fan of Butler...

..gee, why can't they just shut up and act!!
...Very disappointing.

I must read that quote for myself....but I'm not doubting you.

Seems actors are so afraid they'll come across as patriotic or pro-USA....they are intimidated by their peers and quotes like this are the result!

Uh....their leader is KING Leonidas. Sparta was in no way a democracy, proto or otherwise.

Well technically it was a constitutional totalitarianism.

And the Kings (two of them - which divided the power) were more hereditary war leaders, and had less freedom of action than ordinary Spartans.

The real power was with the Ephors - elected for a one term term by the votes of all the citizens - so proto-democracy sounds about right

The Persian Empire on the other hand was a straightforward Oriental Despotism, where the King could do what pretty well pleased him.

My husband got to see a sneak preview of this movie on base over the weekend. He loved it. I like Frank Miller, and the movie looks visually stunning. We planned to go see it on Saturday because I didn't get to go with him on Sunday. I'm still going. He's excited, and it's the last week home for him, so he gets whatever he wants. I'm not even telling him about this, because I don't want him to hear yet another loser disparage what he is going to do.

I heard that interview of Frank Miller and he sounded brilliant. I'll go to support him. Just as my husband tells me whenever I ask how he can do this job when so many people hate him for it, sometimes, in order to save the good people, you have to stick up for the crappy people too.

***Gerard Butler: "300 was sold to me one way: The Spartans are the U.S. But I think if you look at it with half a brain, then you see that the situation is absolutely reversed. ***

I was wondering how long it would take some leftist fool to say this.
We have two ways to look at it...
1. The Spartans (US) hold the line against evil Mid Easterners try to force their rule (Moslems) upon all the known world. Half the Greek leadership (Dems) supported the Persians and one of the two kings of Sparta sided with the Persians. The rest of the Greeks were dily_dallying around trying for apeasement.

OR,
2.The Spartans are as Iraqi insurgents fighting off the invasion of evil Persians (US).

Somehow, #2 does not hold up under careful scrutiny.

Is it still even worth getting upset about an actor being a liberal? I just assume that is the case and don't let it bother me. Besides I can't get too upset with someone for being outspoken about their beliefs when I am about mine.

I agree. They were no better than the Persians invading them. The Spartans had slaves and were in no way a democracy.

As did many of the Founders of the United States. Besides the success of the modern welfare state indicates that the majority of men (sic) prefer the tranquility of servitude over the perils of freedom.

If were not for the Greek defeat of Xerxes, the very seeds of western culture would have been lost to Oriental Despotism. Only a barbarian reared in government skewls could miss this crucial point.

Most important phrase from the quote is:

"But I think if you look at it with half a brain,"

Apparently, he did.

"No one has ever accused actors of being the great thinkers of our time."

Uh, Reagan? Thompson? Arnold? John Wilkes Booth? lol

I tend to think of this as a war movie about Sparta and the Persians.

Rosie O'Donnell, Alec Baldwin, Whoopie Goldberg, TOM Arnold, Carrot Top ... do I really have to continue? You named two smart actors and John Wilkes Booth(lol) and you think that's enough to defend the entire industry? Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Add Tom Selleck, and Bo Derrick and after that, the average IQ drops off like Niagara falls.

All I'm saying is, the movie looks good enough to me to overlook a little silliness from the people who dressed up in it.
