Vikings let veteran Brad Johnson go

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - In a long-expected move, the Minnesota Vikings released quarterback Brad Johnson on Wednesday and made the 15-year veteran an unrestricted free agent.

Tarvaris Jackson, who started the final two games of last season as a rookie, and Brooks Bollinger are the only quarterbacks remaining on the roster.

After the Vikings had recurring problems on offense and finished 6-10, coach Brad Childress ruled Johnson out of the running for the job in 2007 and declared the position an open competition between Jackson and Bollinger. At the time, Childress indicated he was confident in finding a starter between them.

At the NFL's scouting combine last week, however, Childress acknowledged that he spoke with Jackson about the chance that Minnesota could use the seventh overall draft pick on a quarterback — or perhaps in a later round. Notre Dame's Brady Quinn might be available when the Vikings are up at No. 7.

There are a few places where Jeff Garcia could wind up. Minnesota is now one of them.

Looks like the Vikes will suck again next year. They may draft a qb this year. My favorite team to hate so I can't say I am heartbroken at this prospect.

Wouldn't surprise me either. The Skins just re-signed Brunell to what is essentially a 1-year deal for about half of what he was making. Saves the Skins some cap room, and it keeps Brunell on the roster another season. However, he's not really making starting QB money anymore, so they can justify bringing in Garcia.

The Skins might want to look at Garcia to keep the Campbell healthy for another year of "observing" but sooner or later, they need to give that kid the ball. Gibbs seems to always be the last to pull the trigger on new talent.

Which is why Garcia would be a better fit in Minnesota or Tampa. In Minnesota, it allows another year to develop Tavaris Jackson.
In Tampa, you have an insurance policy in the case that Chris Simms is not fully recovered. If Garcia goes to Washington, I can't see Campbell as the QB3.
Brunell would have to be dealt. His re-worked contract does make him a little more trade-friendly.

With Bledsoe gone, the Cowboys need a veteran backup for Romo.

Don't bet on it. Garcia is 37, which wouldn't make him a significant upgrade to Johnson in terms of age. They have made rumblings here about trying to draft a quarterback, which in my mind would be a mistake. We're in desperate need of receiving help, but we should only make that pick because we can't draft a head coach.
