Yep. If the soil is wet enough, those big trees will fall of their own weight, which I'm sure is what happened. Sad, but still, lots of firewood...

Inside or outside?

Outside! If it was that hot inside, I'd have to bury a couple of parakeets...

We're famous for the rainfall here. It's not actually so much how hard much rain falls (only ca 36" in Seattle), but that it is falling so much of the time. We have a nice, steady drizzle going on right now, just enough to keep everything wet.

Little of the wood is hardwood. We do have an old craggy giant maple on another corner of the lot that we'd like to take down -- it's already dropped branches larger than some trees elsewhere in the country. But it's so big that I dare not try.

I used to love the big trees (before we moved up here we lived in redwood country, and our first house was a little cabin nestled in a redwood grove) -- but now I'm not so sure.

Yeah, that's one of the things I remember walking through the Redwood Forests....Every now and then a 10 foot diameter tree on the ground and a plaque next to it saying that this used to be the TOP of the tree behind you until it just fell off.

Think that made a noise even if no one was there to hear it?

Betcha it did!

One of the "interesting" elements of living in the Santa Cruz Mountains in California was how the redwoods would move when it rained enough. Now the ground was mostly clay and sand on sandstone, as I recall, and redwoods have broad but shallow root systems. So often enough when it rained, a whole grove would just slide down a hillside, remaining upright.

I used to take a back road to work from our little rural cabin up a long, winding canyon through the redwoods. One day after some heavy rains, I found my way blocked. The road run right up to a clump of redwoods... and disappeared at their foot.

Speaking of falling trees....I need to get out back and prune mine. I already waited too long as the buds are popping out.

I ask my 5 year old if she wants to go in the back yard and trim the tree with me....she looked up from her movie and told me no thanks, but I can if I want to.

So I will. See Ya!

I'm IN shelter! I still can't go out without a sweater, so I'll wait for a while. One consolation: It's warmer here than it is in Vegas. :o])

"Think that made a noise even if no one was there to hear it?"

sound (sound) noun
1.
a. Vibrations transmitted through an elastic material or a solid, liquid, or gas, with frequencies in the approximate range of 20 to 20,000 hertz, capable of being detected by human organs of hearing.
b. Transmitted vibrations of any frequency.
c. The sensation stimulated in the organs of hearing by such vibrations in the air or other medium.
d. Such sensations considered as a group.

Note that only c. has the philosphical requirement of ears, although a. mentions them in regard to the frequency range. Most scientists would say there is very little vibration associated with the neuronal sensation.

Does a sound-activated recorder function in the absence of people?

(I think the tree made a sound that could have been recorded by seismic equipment!)

I went out a while ago, thinking that I was on a quest for beer.

Instead I found a book, an authorized sequel to Peter Pan.

J. M. Barry's estate authorized the sequel after a contest to select the author. It's called "Peter Pan in Scarlet" -- (No, not gay, as far as I can tell!), by Geraldine McCaughrean.

It seems to capture the flavor of Barry's original in its language style, and looks to be a good read.

So my drinking problem will have to go untreated.
