Five people died over the weekend while fleeing authorities near Hebbronville. The five are believed to be undocumented migrants. Ten people were involved in the wreck, which happened after about 4 p.m. Sunday.
Its unfortunate because immigrants are taking a risk by coming into this country, but the smuggler doesnt care about their safety, said Ed Martinez, an assistant chief patrol agent with Laredo sector.
The 10 were riding in a Nissan Armada that was spotted by Border Patrol agents at the intersection of Texas 285 and County Road 1017, Martinez said.
The agents tried to run the Armadas license plates through a check, but the driver apparently noticed the attention and sped away.
The agents alerted the Jim Hogg County Sheriffs Department, and deputies soon notified them that the vehicle lost control and crashed.
Three adult men and one adult woman from Macedonia were killed, along with an adult man from Mexico. Martinez said their names are not being released pending the notification of family.
Three other Mexican citizens were treated for injuries and released. The driver, believed to be a U.S. citizen, and another man from Mexico were flown to a hospital in Corpus Christi.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement is investigating the driver, and the Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the wreck.
Martinez said the people were probably picked up in the Rio Grande Valley, but where they crossed is uncertain.
