Sentencing Postponed For South S.F. Child Molester

Family members of a 42-year-old computer technician who pleaded no contest to molesting his niece asked for leniency from a San Mateo County Superior Court judge Monday morning, saying his behavior had been very "out of character."

The sentencing of John Olp, a computer administrator at a South San Francisco business, was rescheduled this morning, until next week, in order to allow defense attorney John Runfola time to review a probation report.

According to prosecutors, Olp molested his sister's daughter over a five-year-period, beginning when the girl was 9 years old.

Olp was arrested on the night of June 16, when Colma police found Olp and the girl inside his car at a Colma cemetery, where he had taken her to molest her, according to the San Mateo County district attorney's office.

Inside the car, police found a vibrator, condoms and a towel with semen on it, the district attorney's office reported.

The girl then reportedly told police about the molestations that had taken place from 2001 to 2006, according to the district attorney's office.

On Dec. 22, Olp pleaded no contest to 10 counts of child molestation, for which he faces up to 26 years in prison. In court this morning, Olp's two older brothers acknowledged that their brother needed to be punished, but asked Judge Craig Parsons to consider a lesser sentence.

"This is the most difficult thing I've ever had to face, having a family member do something so terrible to another family member," James Olp said to Parsons, noting that the family has already suffered the tragedy of having another brother murdered years ago.

James Olp asked Parsons to consider a rehabilitative program for his brother. "We know he's got to be punished," he said, "but this is so out of character for him."

Steven Olp echoed his brother, saying that his brother "has been the most generous and supportive person in the family." He added that the family's first concern was for the victim and her mother, their sister, but asked for mercy, saying that he believed his brother would not re-offend.

Olp's sentencing was set Monday for March 7 at 9 a.m. He remains in custody in lieu of $1,000,000 bail.

James Olp asked Parsons to consider a rehabilitative program for his brother. "We know he's got to be punished," he said, "but this is so out of character for him."

Not when he's been doing it for 5 years.

"We know he's got to be punished, but this is so out of character for him."

He did it for 5 years, I'd say that makes it a part of his character.

I really really feel for the girl child. As a victim of molestation myself (but not this severely, much more mildly) I can tell you it will screw you up for life.

I think that his family who is saying "give him leniency" is probably very liberal, as he most likely is.

I personally feel he should get the death penalty. I'm wondering how her father and mother feel, or if they were supportive of her. I'm sure she told her mother way before this.

Isn't this a jaw-dropper? Five years of sexual assault on a child is represented as a momentary indiscretion. If I were a judge, I would always have an air sickness bag under the bench for just such puke-triggering statements as this.

If James is so quick to forgive, I'd suggest law enforcement take a look at where he's been for the past few years.

After five years of being molested, that poor girl is going to need serious rehab herself. I'd like to see those two idiotic older brothers (the ones who asked for leniency) attacked on a regular basis for five years -- and then see how much sympathy they still have for their puke-inducing brother. (And I won't even comment on their comments about it being "out of character." Perhaps they've both been lobotomized or something.)

Bleaah. This story ruins my day.

It's out of character. Usually he goes for little boys.

Yeah, Ellen Degeneres was molested by her stepfather. She almost broke down on the Barbara Walters special last night. This is probably one of the hardest things to overcome, if one overcomes it at all.

Glad you are a survivor, honey. I wish we had more stringent laws myself.

the he's-been-doing-it-for-5-years points aside (though relevant), how does something being out of character lessen it's severity? If it's out of character for someone to murder someone else, does that bring the victim back to life? Is the victim of this abuse going to be less traumatized because this was 'out of character?'

Sentences such as these ought to end in periods.

22 calibur periods.

These people should be sent to a penal colony for life, the ones who are not killed outright. When you know they are guilty, as in this case, put them away from society forever.

The only family member that the judge needs to listen to is the sister, mother of the molested girl.

And, of course, look at FIVE yrs. worth of "facts",
