Q: Did anyone actually ever watch algore's movie? What were the proceeds?

It was based on a series of letters by a Japanese soldier at the time. And it shows the Japanese army as brutal.

Excellent isn't it? Is that Quincy Jones sitting next to him?

A bunch of innocent school children were forced to watch it.

Major problem on this thread. People reply and don't cite the original post and we have no idea what the heck they are talking about. Follow the thread backwards to find out what they are talking about. You can easily do this by clicking the link "To" below the post.

That's what I'm remembering...and mixing Kerry's daugther's nude dress and Pelosi's daughter...lol. Shows how much I pay attention to them.

I never got his appeal either....he has one range of emotion...when he cocks his head....EXACTLY! And when he makes googly eyes at the camera. That's supposed to be charming, I guess.

algore wins the Oscar for "An Inconvenient Truth" Well, the fix was in. Fortunately the phone rang at just the right time and I missed his speech. :-)

I still don't see the accolades for The Unforgiven however...compared to some of his other work.

The only useful purpose of the Academy Awards is to make the "All Brittany, All Anna Nicole" News programs look good.

It's from their side yeah. 'Das Boot' was from the German side but it doesn't promote Nazism. The film shows the Japanese brutally bayonetting unarmed American soldiers.

I knew most docs are made by indies...I stand corrected on the filmaker...I was getting Pelosi's daughter's film mixed with it.

It's much funner to just monitor the Freeper thread without having to watch the show.

Robert was in there? It's been a while since I've seen it, but my favorite scene was when Leary took the toaster upside the drunk's head after he'd warned him to quit beating his wife and he basically told him to piss off.
The next best scene is Leary finally finding Walken and Walken points at Jay Mohr and says "Shoot him" and he kneecaps him.

I guess I was wrong about what I saw as a mild appreciation for gore. I still think it was a mandatory and expected standing O. I didn't see a lot of emotion, but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

I will eventually see it on cable. The IMDB threads indicate however that it's a politically charged film...and it is mainly charged IN SUPPORT of the Japs.

Speaking of visuals - what did you think of The Prestige?I thought it was pretty impressive! Very well made. As ecurbh pointed out, it's a little hard to know who to cheer for as neither of the main characters is truly a good person (hard to know how to phrase that now that I know what I know...), but I enjoyed it. Might actually have to buy it.

The only useful purpose of the Academy Awards You're right, by golly. I just knew they'd be good for something.

The IMDB threads contain every lame brained point of view you can think of. If a film about WW2 is inherently politically charged then you can call this one so.
