I really didn't see the directing in "The Departed" as fantastic. It was overly long, with too many sideshows to the real plot. The story was good, with its twists and turns, but I really do get tired of actors mumbling and directors shooting everything in the dark.

I just went to see "The Departed" last night at the cheapie cinema. Some impressions: the final 10 minutes were a mess and left some gaping holes in the plot, such as whatever happened to that manila envelope given to the girlfriend? Nicholson pretty much phoned in his part, though he had some funny lines; DiCaprio amazes me with every movie, and his performance in this one was fantastic; Matt Damon should go back to being a BoSox fan. All in all, "The Departed" was not close to being Scorsese's best film, but I'd give it a B.

I DO want to see The Queen and The Last King of Scotland

I loved the Last King of Scotland...went to see it because I am a Forrest Whitacker fan, the critics had said that his performance was great, the movie so-so but I disagree...they were both great, the performance and the movie.

I have only once in my almost 40 years as a film critic written these words: "You owe it to yourself to see this film." That was the power of Al Gore's movie about global warming, "An Inconvenient Truth." My review was divorced from politics or political leanings.

Yeah, sure.

It reflected the truth as I understood it,

You libs think the truth is a lie and a lie is the truth. That is the truth as you understand it.

that global warming is real, and is partly caused by human activity. That view has just been ratified in a recent meeting of scientists.

And what about the scientists who think global warming is bull?

BONUS CATEGORY: BEST DOCUMENTARY

I have only once in my almost 40 years as a film critic written these words: "You owe it to yourself to see this film." That was the power of Al Gore's movie about global warming, "An Inconvenient Truth." My review was divorced from politics or political leanings. It reflected the truth as I understood it, that global warming is real, and is partly caused by human activity. That view has just been ratified in a recent meeting of scientists. But aside from the content, the movie is well done cinematically.

The other nominees: "Deliver Us From Evil," "Iraq in Fragments," "Jesus Camp" and "My Country, My Country."

Poor old Rog can't see the forest for the trees. His myopia has prevented him from being able to see just how political his reviews as a critic have become.

It is very, very sad that DiCaprio and Sean Penn are indeed fantastic actors, and if they ever actually dedicated themselves to making movies FOR America, they would be up there with the Duke and Jimmy Stewart.

I noticed that thing about the envelope too. And if you ever watch "CSI," you have to think that Mark Wahlberg's little sterile slippers would hardly guarantee he could get away with the deed.

I hope that the success of The Departed means a domestic release (at least to home video) of the Hong Kong original. How much of the success is drawn from the novel plotline vs. the work of the director?

The script he wrote for Who Killed Bambi was a mess.

It's surprising how credible Roger Ebert is taken as a critic these days considering Leonard Maltin has authored a number of books on film, not just compilations of reviews but researched histories.

But when all other film critic snobs were thumbing their elitist noses at "The Passion of the Christ", Ebert praised the film, saying it was by far the best movie of 2004, and one of the greatest achievments in cinematic history.

One of the only things he has ever been dead-on accurate about.

Since this is an awards thread, I'll ask you what Rog's chances are for winning douche of the Universe.

And recall that he HATED Team America.

I think "Volver" means "to return". It is a Spanish word.

I totally disagree with you on Director. 93 was ok but not superior like The Departed. I thought 93 was very shaky and bounced around and just ok. Everything else I agree with you on. I hope Scorsase (spell?) wins.

I thought "Babel" was nearly unwatchable. I fast forwarded through long, boring segments. The notion that these people were "tied together" was a stretch, at best.

The connection between the story of the deaf Japanese girl with the story of what happened in Morocco?

The girl's father gave a rifle to a Moroccan. One of his sons used that rifle to shoot at a tourist bus.

Not a strong connection...

Ebert is a lib; his views have been expressed many times about reviewing other films of his political beliefs. But when all other film critic snobs were thumbing their elitist noses at "The Passion of the Christ", Ebert praised the film, saying it was by far the best movie of 2004, and one of the greatest achievments in cinematic history.

He liked it but this was his Top 10 list for 2004:

01. Million Dollar Baby (Clint Eastwood)
02. Kill Bill, Vol. 2 (Quentin Tarantino)
03. Vera Drake (Mike Leigh)
04. Spider-Man 2 (Sam Raimi)
05. Moolaadé (Ousmane Sembene)
06. The Aviator (Martin Scorsese)
07. Baadasssss! (Mario Van Peebles)
08. Sideways (Alexander Payne)
09. Hotel Rwanda (Terry George)
10. Undertow (David Gordon Green)
