Young Tasmanian devils are seen at the Mole Creek Wildlife Reserve, east of Launceston in Tasmania, October 2003. A mutant cancer which causes facial tumours on Australia's Tasmanian devil has brought the carnivorous marsupial to the brink of extinction, a leading researcher has said.(AFP/Peter Parks)

Cancer that's spread like that and that easily? That's scary. Cancers aren't supposed to be contagious. Where's the mention of finding the cause?

From everything I've read, Tasmanian devils are disgusting, filthy, vicious animals. If they go extinct, well, animals go extinct. Surely something should evolve to take its place. What the worry?

THE landmark discovery of a small group of genetically distinct Tasmanian devils could save the species from extinction.
