BANGKOK (Reuters) - A student and aspiring actress who appeared in a revealing dress at the Thai equivalent of the Oscars has been given two weeks community service by her university as punishment for undermining morality.
Chotiros "Amy" Suriyawong, a final-year student at Bangkok's prestigious Thammasat University, ensured maximum media exposure by stepping out last week in a full-length black gown, tantalisingly split from cleavage to hips to hem.
Overnight sensation ... Thai actress and uni student Chotiros Suriyawong became
immediately infamous for her questionable choice of evening gown at Thailand's version
of the Oscars. The controversy provoked disciplinary action from her university, which
has imposed a penalty requiring her to read to the blind for two weeks. Photo: Reuters
But university chiefs were unimpressed, describing the outfit as "obscene" and giving her 15 days of book-reading to the blind as punishment, newspapers reported on Friday.
"That dress", which Chotiros had to show to university staff to prove it had special "sewn-in" underwear, sparked a frenzied debate about public morality in the Buddhist country, which remains coy about sexuality despite its reputation as the anything-goes prostitution capital of southeast Asia.
One producer went so far as to delete all footage of Chotiros from one of his films, domestic media reported.
"I'm sorry," a weeping Chotiros told a news conference on Thursday. "If I'd known it would have been so controversial, I wouldn't have done it."
Tulsathit Taptim, editor of the English-language Nation newspaper, said the brouhaha had "exposed ugly truths" about Thailand and its male-dominated society.
"We have never heard of universities firing male students for visiting prostitutes, or companies demoting male executives for fathering illegitimate children," he said in an editorial.
Hey, I call say it in Thai too, but certainly not as fast as a Thai middle school student is required to recite it.
Oh yea? Well, I have it written on a T-shirt... IN THAI! So there!
Where the heck could you find one that size over there?
I have it... I didn't say it fits. :)
If it did fit you'd have to start using the nickname luk chang.
I think I have one of the world's coolest collection of never worn T-shirts. It seams like everyone I know buys them for me and then gets upset when I don't wear them.... "but it is the largest they had".... I am happy half of them don't fit but some of the Special Operations ones are very cool.
Consider it stolen! LOL
Funny, I always thought it was Bangkok
Rofl! She's very cute, but a little more class would have been nicer. Something like that looks like it belongs in the bedroom, not an awards show. She should be flogged. :P
