yes, my home.. All the homes in area have the icicles now..

oh your pigeons are lovely...on their perches so symmetrical

great pix with the one flapping wings in foreground.

On my walk today I saw a great site.. It was snowing heavily & the canal was mostly frozen but by one of the locks was a spill way & some running water.. and as the dogs approached a flurry of wings & about a dozen blue herons left the area.. I had left camera in car as pix in heavy snow do not turn out well.

We have two rookeries in the National Park here & one is about a mile from my home & this is where the birds were flying towards. I am guessing they were finding food in canal area(fish)

It was quite amazing how quickly they took their position about 3 minutes earlier none of them were in that area as I had just cleaned it out.

As I left the loft to get the camera they just flew up there.

I was pleased and amazed catching the one in flight, first of all I thought oh no that got in the way of the photo and nearly deleted it but then when I previewed I realised it added to the photo.

Those are impressive pictures. I always liked the snow when I had time to prepare for it and enjoy it. Snow on a weekend wasn't too bad when I could bundle up and take a walk. Snow during the week was just a pain because it made getting to work that much harder.

When I was in Ashford town centre yesterday I popped into one of the charity shops and found a book that was published in conjunction with the BBC TV program Food and Drink. It was in their bargain basement box and I paid under 20 cents for it.

I found an unusual pancake recipe in the book

Apple Clafoutis - Serves 4 - 6


It is a giant fruit pancake which they recommend is eaten hot. In France where the recipe originates it is made with a variety of apple called Reinette in Britain most of our cooking apples are suitable.

Ingredients
5 eggs
5oz plain flour
5oz icing (powder) sugar
One tablespoon vegetable oil
1lb cooking apples unpeeled cored and diced

4oz mixed dried fruit (raisins, sultanas(golden raisins) and ready to eat dried apricots

2 tablespoon caster sugar
One teaspoon ground allspice

Beat eggs, flour and icing sugar together or blend in a food processor or blender until the mixture resembles a batter. Add the oil and mix the batter again. Pour the mixture into a greased oval or round gratin dish, making sure the dish is deep enough for the fruit. The mixture will rise, so use a dish at least 1 1/2 inches deep. Combine the apples, dried fruit and caster sugar and distribute evenly over the top. If using allspice sprinkle it on top of the mixture.

Cook in a preheated oven at 350F (190C) for 30 - 40 minutes.

Serve hot with either double cream or thick full fat Greek yogurt.

For those wanting to lose weight, the first thing to do is CUT THE SUGAR. No ifs, ands or buts. Cut out sweets. You get a sufficient amount of natural sugar in fruits and some products like peanut butter and cottage cheese (check your labels). Think of sugar as having a big skull and crossbones painted across it. You don't need it, it has no nutritional value.

Hi, peeps.

I just got home. I drove out to Philadelphia (6 and a half hours) so Hoodie and I could do wedding stuff. We found our DJ and also I picked out my tux and the best man/groomsmen's tuxedos.

She's still out there at her grandparents' house and is driving back to DC tomorrow.

I agree.. It has no food value & feeds cancer.

My years working with cancer support groups have been quite educational. I am personally working more & more towards a move to Mediterranean & Macrobiotic diets.

No refined flours/sugars. No dairy(that is my hangup... cheese!) and a lot of other things that make it a hard diet to swallow (pun intended) for most.

I know there is one type of approved sweetener & unfortunately even fruits for the Macro "HEALING" diet are a nono by in large.

thanks for input. Funny how many weekends the thread is a food/health one!

The 2 big no no's in life fat and sugar I love. To cut either out of my diet would mean setting up instant fail. If I thought I could never eat sugar or certain fats again I would not be able to stick to a sensible eating plan.

the fat is maybe what I crave in cheese. But even when I ate meat, I was a cheese fiend.

I love some things with sugar but by in large the past 10 years have desired it less.. come to think of it , it rather cooincided with menopause..

I have done the natural HRT.. not chemical ..that may have some bearing, who knows.

I still love a drippy gooey chocolate whatever now & then etc.

I have heard a lot of people as they get older seem to desire really sweet things less maybe it is something to do with energy levels - they do not need the quick boost that younger people do.

I am not a great potato or rice or pasta fan either so I do not eat much long term energy foods maybe you eat more of those so do not feel the need for the quick energy food such as sugar which of course gives instant boost but wears off much quicker.
