Not quite. During the Battle of Britain, some Heinkel bombers sent to bomb docks on the Thames got off beam and dropped their bombs on civilian areas. If I recall correctly, they were courtmartialled and executed when they returned to the mainland. Churchill then ordered a retaliatory raid on Germany, At that point, Hitler ordered the terror raids that started in London [and gave the RAF a breather], which eventually led to the loss of the Battle of Britain by the Luftwaffe.

Can you cite an authoritative source for this claim? I have never heard of it.
