Country Radio Still Cold to Dixie Chicks

Country radio still isn't ready to make nice with the Dixie Chicks.

With a haul of Grammys Sunday, the Texas trio topped their comeback from their 2003 Bush-bashing comment that turned them from superstars to pariahs — but Music Row isn't welcoming them back into the country-music fold.

"Most country stations aren't playing the Chicks, and they aren't going to start now," said Jim Jacobs, owner of WTDR-FM, a country radio station in Talladega, Ala.

The awards might have the opposite effect, sparking another radio backlash against the group. Country broadcasters said Monday that the group's five Grammys show how out of touch the Recording Academy is from the average country fan.

"I think (the listeners) are outraged," said Tony Lama, program director for KXNP in North Platte, Neb. "This is rural, conservative America. They are just disgusted."

Country stations quit playing the Chicks in 2003 after singer Natalie Maines told a London audience: "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.

Almost overnight, Maines became a lightning rod in the debate over the Iraq war, with conservatives blasting her for criticizing the president, especially while on foreign soil.

The Chicks sang about the controversy in their single, "Not Ready to Make Nice," which won Grammys as record and song of the year. Their album, "Taking the Long Way," won album of the year.

The United States has become a place where entertainers and professional athletes are mistaken for people of importance.

The AP article doesn't bother to mention that the Bush-bash wasn't the only thing that alienated them from their audience. Last year, when they insulted their country music fans, they burned their bridge.

Because of their anti war stance though, they still get coverage on MTV & VH-1.

CMT is also owned by MTV and they are on that often. I also notice that CMT has gone from plain country to urban pseudo-country. Their alter programming is becoming very liberal and amoral. It's unrecognizable from it's former self.

I watch Science and Discovery channels these days mostly. Don't miss CMT one bit. The current music sucks!

No amount of awards will make people like the chicks again. Its over for them, hence the consolation prizes last night.

FTA: "Country radio may not be ready to embrace them again, but the Grammy runaway suggests that a significant portion of the rest of the country has come around to their way of thinking."

I call BS. Their album was #9 on the list of most popular in 2006. The Grammys are voted on by fellow artists, not us regular Americans.

It is total BS. They had to cancel 14 US conerts because of lack of ticket sales.

The entertainment industry is the last bastion of Stalinistic Censorship. See any real CW stars get any awards?? Just like the Academys, walk the Commie line and get your trophy.

I hope they enjoy eating their Grammy's. With their Grammy and a coupla bucks, they can buy a cuppa coffee.

Doesn't matter how many leftist-Hollyweird awards they get, the only place they make money to put in THEIR pockets is on tour and with all the cancellations, it has to have cost them a pretty penny for all those unsold seats.

Cancellations and unsold seats = no profit = no pay.

Couldn't happen to a better buncha Communists- the Ditzy Clits.

Their DUmmy socialist mindset got the awards for them. They got very little airplay. The crockumentary tanked. They had to cancel a number of shows. Their "awards" won't help them. No one really remembers (or cares) who won. Seriously who won the awards they won last year? Year before?

I don't know either :)

I agree 1000000% about CMT.

I'm planning on upgrading my Dish package anyway, then I'll have GAC (Great American Country). Last time I saw it, it was more about music, and not insipid programming, intended to be avante garde.

I would LOVE to know exactly how much the presidential insult cost the Dixie Chicks in dollars and cents - per word!

Not as much as it cost their record company.
