He was benched because he was a lousy player. Jerry Sloan did say he didn't know Amechi was gay when he played for Utah, but if he did know, it would have had an effect on how much Sloan played him. Jerry Sloan is known for being brutally honest.
Amechi was no big loss, in fact it opened up a spot for Mehmet Okur. Pretty good trade off, if you ask me.

I don't think he's the first. IIRC, another NBA player came out in the late 1970s and he retired from professional sports and also wrote a book. Just can't remember any more right now . . .

Amaechi, 36, played five seasons with Cleveland, Orlando and Utah, averaging 6.2 points and 2.6 rebounds before retiring in 2003.

Wow, and he did not make the All-Star team. Probably because he was gay too.

"I try and be good in many different areas, a strong advocate in many areas. But two minutes after people see this interview I'll just be that big gay guy."

Well, if all the people of your ilk didn't base who they are off of what they do in the bedroom people might think different. Gay people wear their gayness like a profession, as the sole defining characteristic of who they are.

If he didn't make it with the Cavs (no pun intended) at the time he played with them, he was not any good because they weren't that great either.

I remember when he played for the Magic the local press did a story on him about his tea drinking (as he's a Brit).

The camera zoomed in on this little teacup he was holding with his pinky in the air. While in uniform.

Seemed really weird at the time. Maybe not so much anymore.

Amaechi is convinced his gay lifestyle was a factor behind Jazz coach Jerry Sloan not using him at the start of the 2003-2004 season

Let's see here, in the two seasons with Utah he averaged the following:
RPG: 1.75
PPG: 2.6
FT%: .551
FG%: .320
Also he averaged over 10 MPG, when your 6'10" averaging over 10 minutes per game with 2.6 points and less than 2 boards, you ain't getting cut because your gay.
