Sorry I disappeared early last night but we had a medical emergency a little before I did the ping and I had to keep an eye on dad and help him more than usual.

Basically dad had angina and used his Glyceryl Trinitrate spray but because it did not act immediately he thought that the sprayer had not worked so used it again.

It had worked but he was just being impatient for it to act, the result of the double dose was that because the way it works was to drop his blood pressure within seconds. He nearly blacked out and his eyes looked very strange.

As a precaution I rang the emergency services but even by the time I had given them the details and done the checks they wanted he was coming round. By that time though it was too late to stop the ambulance turning up as it had already been booked.

It arrived about 10 mins later and the paramedics did a few checks on dad a lot of talking to him and ascertaining that the angina attack was normal; it was just his reaction to the medication that was not. They explained how the spray works and why it had this reaction.

Officially they should have taken him to hospital but they could tell that dad did not want to go and personally the stress of the admission and no doubt waiting about (because by now he would not have be classed as an priority emergency) would have been worse than how he now felt.

They gave him an ECG as they have one of those portable units on board (they bought it into the house so he did not have to go out to the ambulance - they were super). The result was almost normal for his age etc except as one would expect the blood pressure was slightly lower confirming basically the spray was the problem.

He signed a couple of forms stating he did not want to be hospitalized and they left telling me though if he took a turn for the worse to ring emergency services immediately and when they came to give them the copy of the paperwork already completed.

I moan about our NHS but when it is a real emergency they are good and quick to the scence it is just non emergency or waiting to see a specialist in the first place that is the problem and why health care IMHO should not be run by government. Sorry for being political.

Anyway I had to help him a lot and each time I intended to come back up I either was doing something for him or having a cat nap. I ended up sleeping in the chair downstairs in case he needed me (we have converted our front room into his bedroom).

I have now just worken from an extended cat nap checked on dad and thankfully he is much better and has suggested that I in fact go upstairs for an hour or so just to get some rest in a more normal laying postion as I have a bit of stiff neck.

Once again sorry for bailing last night hopefully things were OK on the thread - will catch up on posts later.
