The official weekend (substitute) thread (9-11th Feb 2007)
9th February 2007 | Snugs

Posted on 02/09/2007 9:20:30 PM PST by snugs

Next week is Valentine's Day which for some of us if we are single can be depressing on the other hand we do not have the dilemma will We buy the right bottle of perfume, wine or box of chocolates. Will we pick the right restaurant, movie or play.

Instead of concentrating on the lack of a partner at the time of year lets look at the positives of our lives as singles. Places we can go, things we can do without having to negotiate with a partner.

Some may have children or elderly parents which means you are restricted but even so these are family members that most times offer unconditional love and support even if at times it does not seem like it. A partner gives love but often conditional love, a relationship that has to be worked at rather than being born into. There are great rewards in both and pressures in both.

As singles we can also appreciate and enjoy seeing happy couples this Valentines and sympathising with those who are just acting it out and being thankful once again that being single is preferable in many cases to pretending.

Be positive lets think of happy past Valentine Days maybe as a child for a lot of women when your father made you feel special. I know several families where the father always sends valentine cards to his daughters even though they are grown just to make sure they are not forgotten.

Come on all lets have fun and not dwell on what we do not have but celebrate that what we do have.

Here is a chocolate version though this one has mint in it but you can omit that if you do not want or like mint.

Chocolate Mint Cut out Cookies Recipe #197336

They come out soft and chewy if you cook them just right. Ice (Frost) them if you want.
36
cookies
time to make 1½ hours 25 min prep
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
2 cups flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt

Frosting

2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
1-2 tablespoon milk
  1. Cream the butter and sugar. Add the egg and extracts beating until fluffy. Stir in all the remaining dry ingredients on low speed until well mixed.
  2. Divide the dough in half; wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate 1 hour.
  3. Roll dough on a lightly floured board to 1/8th inch thickness. Cut into shapes and place on ungreased cookie sheets.
  4. Bake at 400 degrees F for 6-8 minutes or until set. Cool.
  5. For frosting: combine the butter, sugar and extract. Gradually add just enough milk for spreading consistency

Thanks, Dolly! I love all of those songs. I about wore out my parent's LPs from this era playing them on my wobbly little record player when I was a kid!

Hi Theresa, I am going to try to make a few CDs using these & the war songs of the era that were on the thread. Give them to older family members who remember them.

Just a bit of trivia. "Holding out for a Hero" was the theme song for a short-lived CBS show called Cover-Up back in 1984-85. It starred Jennifer O'Neill and Jon-Erik Hexum. Hexum was goofing around with a .44 Magnum prop gun, held it to his head and pulled the trigger. The family allowed his organs to be harvested...

Enjoyed hearing the song again, though I think the original by Bonnie Tyler was probably the best rendition of the song.

For Max, some Jack Bauer Facts:

When Chuck Norris goes to bed at night, he checks under the bed for Jack Bauer.

Some people see the glass as half full. Others see it as half empty. Jack Bauer see the glass as a deadly weapon.

When a convicted terrorist was sentenced to face Jack Bauer, he appealed to have the sentence reduced to death.

The city of Los Angeles once named a street after Jack Bauer in gratitude for his saving the city several times. They had to rename it after people kept dying when they tried to cross the street. No one crosses Jack Bauer and lives.

When Jack Bauer ran out of ammo, he caught 3 bullets in his chest and used them to reload.

The 2007 budget for the US Military covers Jack Bauer, two pistols and four billion rounds of ammunition.

Jack Bauer's calendar goes from March 31st to April 2nd, because no one fools Jack Bauer.

My husband doesn't wish he was Jack Bauer. He wishes I was Jack Bauer.

Chuck Norris counted to infinity - twice. Jack Bauer would meanwhile do something important.

If everyone on "24" followed Jack Bauer's instructions, it would be called "12".

There have been no terrorist attacks in United States since Jack Bauer has appeared on television.

Superman wears Jack Bauer pajamas.

If it tastes like chicken, looks like chicken, and feels like chicken, but Jack Bauer says its beef. Then it's beef.

Jack Bauer sleeps with a pillow under his gun.

Jack Bauer could strangle you with a cordless phone.

Jack Bauer doesn't have a firewall on his PC. He has a Bauerwall. It's basically just a JPEG of Jack Bauer. No virus has ever attacked Jack Bauer's PC. Ever

In order to control illegal immigration in the United States, the president installed cardboard cutouts of Jack Bauer along the US/Mexico border.

Jack Bauer doesn't miss. If he didn't hit you it's because he was shooting at another terrorist twelve miles away.
