I always thought of FreeRepublic primarily not so much a conservative forum...which it certainly is...but as an anti-liberal forum.

I am very conservative fiscally, but somewhat liberal on the social issue(s) of illegal immigration, father's rights (Elian Gonzalez), and spouse's right (Terry Schiavo).

I feel that only a Superstar candidate can defeat the likes of a Rodham-Clinton/Obama ticket. Rudy Giuliani is that candidate...with hopefully Romney or Gringrich...or Rice as VP.

As a member in good standing since August 1998, I have seen this forum invaded by 'illegal' conservatives. The kind that would withhold their votes if the GOP candidate was deemed too moderate or too leftward to satisfy their selfish, one-issue interests.

The type that can't type a paragraph without reference to a bible verse or thanks to God.

The type that can't stand the idea of less fortunates who don't have the time or inclination to deal with the broken immigration bureaus of the USA and instead show the initiative to sneak here to lead productive lives and work hard for a better opportunity....you know...like the vast majority of our great grandparents and grandparents.

I have no doubt in my mind that someday there will be a POTUS whose descendants were 'illegal immigrants".

Of course if the faux religious right has their way....he will most certainly be a democrat.

Somewhat liberal! You are to the left of Jesse Jackson on this issue.

AND;

Your forefathers broke the law to get here? Mine didn't.

As I've said before....you are no patriot.

Well FreeRepublic is first and foremost a conservative forum. But I don't see the strong anti-immigrants as being all that conservative or patriotic. There are areas where immigration is a serious problem, where they are into illegal activities and also abusing our hospitals, education and welfare systems. I thought Mike Pense came up with a reasonable compromise, but was thoroughly trashed by the anti-immigration folks. Until they recognize that there is a real benefit to allowing more immigrants into this country legally, they are only going to be a fringe group who will not have any say in the debate. Right now, the immigration issue will be decided by a Democratic Congress and Bush, so I expect a heck of a lot weaker policy than what Pense proposed. We need to crack down on those abusing our social service system and those who are committing real crimes, but we also need a process where we can allow those who are productive to stay.
