What's the best adultery song?

What's the best adultery song?

In light of current events, KFOG's Dave Morey conducted a contest this morning for the best adultery song ever.

His listeners (of a certain demographic) nominated a bunch, including the Eagles' "Lyin' Eyes," Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," and Derek and the Dominos' "Layla" -- which has the advantage of being about the most famous adulterous affair since, what, Paris and Helen of Troy?

Dave's winner: "Me and Mrs. Jones," by Billy Paul, which isn't much musically but does have lyrics that resonate with people who've got a thing going on.

Even more poignant, though not reflective of the mess at City Hall, there's Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love For You."

Aren't there some good songs out there (maybe of the Country Western genre) where the adulterer ends up appropriately daid?

It's not that I hate you darlin'
Don't mind you havin' fun
But when I saw your feets
Under her sheets
I was sho' glad I had my gun...

On the other hand - Randy Travis

On one hand I count the reasons I could stay with you And hold you close to me, all night long. So many lover's games I could play with you And on that hand I see no reason why it's wrong

But on the other hand, There's a golden band To remind of someone who would not understand On one hand I could stay and be your loving man But the reason I must go is on the other hand

In your arms I feel the passion, I thought had died When I looked into your eyes I found myself When I first kissed your lips I felt so alive I've got to hand it to you girl, you're something else

But on the other hand, There's a golden band To remind of someone who would not understand On one hand I could stay and be your loving man But the reason I must go is on the other hand

Nothing going on musically with "Me and Mrs. Jones"???!!! The author is an idiot. That is one of the most GORGEOUS melodies and arrangements in the history of pop/soul/RnB. The harmonies, the strings, the minor key flourishes, and of course Billy Paul's aching, soaring lead vocal.... a total CLASSIC.

Another good one:

"Shot her down
because she made me sore.

I thought I was her daddy
but she had 5 more."

Johnny Cash - Cocaine Blues

Country music is chock full of "cheatin' songs":

Loving Here and Living There and Lying in Between
You Two-Timed Me One Time Too Often
It’s Not Love (But It’s Not Bad)
The Race Is On
Third Rate Romance
All Right (I'll Sign The Papers)

And many, many more.

Number One is Hank - Your Cheating Heart with a whole bunch for #2, althought Almond Brothers - One Way Out would be my #2.

Which brings to mind my personal favorite, "Fist City".

"If you don't wanna go to Fist City you'd better detour round my town Cause I'll grab you by the hair of the head and I'll lift you off of the ground."

They don't make them like Loretta anymore.

Dolly wrote it and recorded it. Maybe Olive NJ recorded it too.

Having been cheated on by past girlfriends, I've adopted Die, Die, Die My Darling, by the Misfits as an appropriate adultery song.

My wife knows this and we get along just fine.

For his movie 'the devil's rejects' Rob Zombie created a faux 70's country/western group called Banjo and Sullivan, and released a 'greatest hits' album for them. One of those 'hits' was titled "I'm home gettin' hammered while She's out gettin' nailed"

There's another infamous one by David Allen Coe, but I can't print the name here. If you know which one I'm talking about, you're probably already smiling (shame on you!). ;-).
