ON February 18, the Chinese world will usher in the new year of an animal, but its identity will be suppressed. A billion people will view China's - and the world's - most-watched annual television show, the Chinese New Year's Eve variety spectacular, but the viewers will be no wiser as to which animal is involved.

This is strange. The Uighurs are supposed to not be particularly violent, though there is a peaceful separatist movement to create an East Turkmenistan. Usually the Communist Government doesn't make such considerations about offending one of its minorities. Is the threat of social turmoil and unrest that high already?
