It's quotes weekend! What are your favorite quotes? Some of my favorites:

"I see America, not in the setting sun of a black night of despair ahead of us, I see America in the crimson light of a rising sun fresh from the burning, creative hand of God. I see great days ahead, great days possible to men and women of will and vision." --Carl Sandburg

"It is by the goodness of God that in our country we have those three unspeakably precious things: freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and the prudence never to practice either of them." --Mark Twain

"Friendship is certainly the finest balm for the pangs of disappointed love." --Jane Austen

Well I am 25. Single and available (as you may have seen in an earlier post), I like sci-fi (novels mostly, I don't watch much TV or movies), heavy metal music (especially Warrior, Anthrax, Doro, Sabaton, Saxon, Iron Maiden, Lacuna Coil and Blitzkrieg), cats (I have two). I enjoy writing, reading, shooting and sometimes playing computer games. I do not know if I feel comfortable revealing where I live though.

It is a very old English recipe I suspect from the days when dried fruit was to expensive for the ordinary person and probably carroway seeds were plentiful.

May even have been that many people working in service or the like may even have been given these by their employer (or heaven forbid acquired them - probably easier than acquiring dried fruit).

Poppyseeds have never really been that popular in England in recent times though we have dusted them over bread and put in the ocassional loaf but carroway seeds were much more popular. Having said that it is now hard to buy them apart from in very small quantities in top class supermarkets or health food shops. I buy mine by mail order as it is much cheaper.

If you make the cake in a loaf tin you can slice and butter it but I find it rich and moist enough without doing that though I do not cook it as long as the recipe says.

Reading your post again - a pound cake actually is very similar to what we call a Victoria Sponge where all ingredients are equal in weight originally a pound. Then as families got smaller half a pound I normally do the recipe of 6oz and 3 eggs as we estimate an egg weighs 2oz.

In Britain we split the mix into 2 shallow round pans about 6 or 7 inch dia though some I believe use 8 inch but then you would increase mixture to 8oz and 4 eggs. We call them sponge tins. Bake for about 25 - 30 mins max on 375 less if you have a fan oven.

Sandwich together with red jam and dust top with icing (powdered/confectioner sugar). If you wish a very small amount of butter icing can be spread over the jam or fresh cream but the outside of the cake should not be iced or frosted - it was be far to rich.

PS I use SR flour but you can use plain and baking powder, if you use the all in one method of putting all ingredients in bowl at one time and mixing then a little water about 2 or 3 tablespoons is needed and some people do add a little baking powder. You can only really use this method with Self Raising flour.

I think that Americans adapted the carroway seed cake to a poppyseed cake also at some point with the various influx of English into America and having to use the ingredients that was readily available to them.

more snow falling here...

where i go to school is only five blocks away from Lake Michigan, so during the winter we see something called "lake effect snow"

OTOH, the lakeshore is warmer than the inland--sometimes there's a 10 degree Fahrenheit difference...

Yes in fact if you have an idea for next week that would be welcome because I have not had a volunteer for next week so it looks as if I am probably doing the next 2 weekends before Valentine's weekend.
