Excellent advice. Now why not also tell bike riders not to run red lights, ride against traffic, exceed the speed limit in low MPH zones, or otherwise disobey traffic laws. Few may know it, but in California at least, bicycles are subject to the same traffic regulations as other vehicles on the road. Pardon the pun, but safety is a two street. It's juts that the consequences for the bicyclist are much more dire than for the driver when the two meet.

Yup, I agree that cyclists not just should legally, but should by sanity follow all the rules of the road. The laws of physics are very much slanted against us.
But I gotta say, at least in my neck of the woods, on the rides I go on, the idiotic behavior ratio is slanted very heavily in favor of the car drivers.... :-(

I bicycle commute, but I don't do it on Saturday morning at around 2:00. Too dangerous.
But thanks to cell phones, it is now ALWAYS 2:00 a.m. on Saturday.
I have to really watch my mirror.

I would think Placentia would be a safe place to ride...it's all flat with wide streets, for the most part. I guess everything comes with a risk.

Coach House? (never heard of the wheelhouse)

That's the place!Wow, twenty years and lots of damaged and destroyed brain cells. You notice that I couldn't remember the name of the stupid theater in downtown San Diego - And I saw the Dead Kennedys in that place...still can't remember the name...
I wasn't sure Coach House was right until I found this pic - LINK
That's definitely the place - Seemed a tad "highbrow" for Social D, but it was a good show nonetheless.

With all that weight loss and enhanced cardiovascular strength, not to mention those great legs, guess he thought he was gonna live forever. Alas, reality seems to have impinged a bit on his self-delusion and caught up with him. Perhaps like-minded individuals in search of their "fitness fix" might consider jogging on railroad tracks, cross-harbor swimming, or the unroped ascent of high tension electrical towers as alternatives of equal or greater safety.
Maybe he was just enjoying a bike ride.

Apparently you didn't get the memo after the Mt. Hood climbing debacle. We now have FReeper recreation police. Only someone sitting on their butt, behind a computer with a can of diet soda and half eaten burrito on the desk, while using hindsight is allowed to decide if your recreational activity is acceptable.

I admit to having a "thing" for Mike Ness back when I was young and cute. Ball and Chain is one of my favorite songs, and I agree, the SD album from 1990 is really, really special.
On a side note, as avid cyclist, I avoid roads as much as I can. I stick to paths just for the sheer safety of them. Just keeping up at a 20mph clip is dangerous enough, just hitting a rock and wiping out at that speed is something I fear -- I never willingly add cars to the mix. Especially around here in Orlando.
