I read you shouldn't take the biggest or smallest of the litter, but I also read how to "test" a puppy. Even though he's the smallest puppy he was relaxed when I held him, relaxed when I put him in the cruk of my arm and looked me in the eyes for a long time. He was alert and looked when I clapped and he was the only one who cocked his head to say "what" when I talked to him. He held his own with the other puppies without being too rambunctous. He allowed me to hold him out with no other support and didn't squirm and looked me in the eyes, he allowed me to put him on his back and played and swatted at my fingers. He did all the right things you want from a puppy except he was the "runt" of the litter. I was assured that there should only be a difference in height of all the puppies of about 2 inches anyway. I'll post more pictures when I get him in 3 weeks, in the interm I will visit and handle him as much as possible so that the move is less stressful for him. On to the pictures!

As for him and Jake, Jake lives up the street. I will start bringing him things with the puppys' scent on it, so he becomes familiar with the scent. Then he and Jake will meet at a neutral location so he doesn't feel he's taking Jakes territory at my house. Then they'll start getting super

Remember, traits you want in a dog that's going to be primarily a hunter are very different from those you want in a housepet. If you look on the breeder's website, one of her puppies grew up to be a top-notch therapy dog, so it's pretty likely she's doing something right!

I think it depends on the breed. I never let my herding breed pups go before 7 weeks (never a problem) but 8 weeks was the norm. Past 8 weeks they needed alot of individual attention that was best done by the owner. Nine weeks still is within the window for puppies to make easy adjustments. 12 weeks would definitely be a problem.

Most standard poodles I've been around have been really easy going sensible dogs. It's a lovely breed, congratulations.

The judge in that photo is a guy named Frank Sabella. He's one of the country's foremost experts on Poodles. He's got a very good eye for a good dog of most any breed.

The breeders I know raise smooth fox terriers, so I'm not familiar with Standard Poodle breeders.

Now, with that disclaimer :-), your breeder's web site looks very professionally done. I was impressed with the fact that they don't breed frequently (it seemed like once/year?); they do therapy work with their dogs; and they are microchipped. I was a little unsure about what they meant about "All puppies and dogs remain in the ParrisHill extended family". Is that for information and/or if something happens and you can't keep the puppy, even if several years go by, will they take back the puppy/dog? All the reliable breeders I know will take back their puppies no matter how many years go by; in fact, WANT their puppies back.

I am sending you by Freepmail information about what responsible breeders should and shouldn't do.

I have to admit I love the smell of puppie's breath!

It's very nice until they're teething . .. then it's yeccch! Ruby is pushing out her canines right now, and I found a couple of molars on the floor. Her breath is just a WEE bit rank. . . . but I still let her kiss me.

She went to the barn last night and met my horse for the first time -- she was a little apprehensive at first and hiding behind mama while she stared at the REALLY BIG DOGS and they stared at her. But she found some of that nice Puppy Candy on the ground (you know what I mean) and THEN she came and kissed me . . . double ugh!

Don't feel bad! I thought exactly the same thing . . . although I was a lot less tactful . . . I said, "isn't she a little on the stocky side for a GSP?"

I see a lot of GSPs - there are 4 or 5 of them near my parents' house at the beach . . . and you could have fooled me, Gidget really does look like a GSP.

It just goes to show you CAN'T perfectly accurately know what kind of dog you're seeing!
