Bob is getting a new PUPPY!! Pictures included of 6 week old puppy, I take him home at 9 weeks.

Posted on 01/24/2007 3:42:37 PM PST by word_warrior_bob

Jakey is getting a baby brother! Feel free to give me name ideas, pure bred Standard Poodle, champion bloodlines, I got him here, http://www.parrishill.com/

I read you shouldn't take the biggest or smallest of the litter, but I also read how to "test" a puppy. Even though he's the smallest puppy he was relaxed when I held him, relaxed when I put him in the cruk of my arm and looked me in the eyes for a long time. He was alert and looked when I clapped and he was the only one who cocked his head to say "what" when I talked to him. He held his own with the other puppies without being too rambunctous. He allowed me to hold him out with no other support and didn't squirm and looked me in the eyes, he allowed me to put him on his back and played and swatted at my fingers. He did all the right things you want from a puppy except he was the "runt" of the litter. I was assured that there should only be a difference in height of all the puppies of about 2 inches anyway. I'll post more pictures when I get him in 3 weeks, in the interm I will visit and handle him as much as possible so that the move is less stressful for him. On to the pictures!

Yeah, that looks like a really vicious dog to me . . .

(don't worry, if that's the worst mistake you make today you're home free.)

Here's some names I'm considering.

Davey-I always think of the animated, puppet Christian show and the dog saying Day-Vey

Sonny-I don't have any children and he will be my son, he has a sunny disposition, Sonny Corleone was a good character in the Godfather, and Sonny Bono was a Republican

Happy-Dogs make me happy, he was happy with me, may be a little "sappy" though

Rocky-Me ex and her kids like it, may be a little too common for me, for a sweet, smart dog this name may be too rough.

Bugs,Bugsy-Bugs Bunny is my all-time hero.

Slappy-I really like the way he laid on his back and slapped at my finger and played.

Joey-my ex liked that one, it was her first impression of him, she thought he was a Joey

are you prepared for the sibling rivalry that you are going to see? because i swear it is not all that different than kids! i specifically got a second dog because i thought my nearly 4 yo Cavalier would love a little sister. well dang, she is ever so slowly growing on him and it is about 6 weeks since we got her. he is putting her through dominance and submission training, trying to prove he is the alpha dog and she is a feisty little snip.

Well, if you go with Davey, you have a ready-made registered name to go along with it.

Considering the reasons given, I like "Sonny" best. You may wish to wait a while until after he lives with you, and a name may pop up.

That's a good one. I used to watch that show. I know exactly what you are talking about.

At some point, I will have a pet named Newman, so I can say, "Hello, Newman.

As for the sibling rivalry, Jake will be given a slow process of introduction, getting his scent a few times from his towel or pillow. Then he will meet him on neutral ground, once he accepts him they will have supervised visits at both houses until he accepts him as a little brother or a father figure.

Jake is VERY gentle with small animals and children and other dogs. Even after dogs he meets growl or snap at him he still tries to greet the dog until he or I decide the dog is not ready. He accepts Sniffles the bunny as one of his pack and is not a dominant dog, it shouldn't take long for him to accept the puppy and every precaution will be taken.

You should get a parrot and teach him to say "Jerry" and you'll have a little comedy routine with him.

hey, i know all about what they say, and we did the same thing, introduced them on neutral territory, we still give Lucius his props as the alpha dog by feeding him first, greeting him first etc. I am just giving you a heads up that even when you do everything right and even when it ends up fine in the end, you are likely in for a period of adjustment when the older dog's feelings are hurt for a little while. Lucius is the gentlest ball of fur on the planet and LOVES other dogs, and i have three kids and he is great with everyone and everything. but still the first time i heard him take off at top speed after Chanel, growling as if he would maul her to bits, i was taken aback! he had never growled hardly in his life, but he sounded vicious and i let it go on because i realized in watching them that she NEVER once yelped or squealed, so he never hurt her despite the snarling, and that when she raced under a chair that he can't fit under, he would bark for her to come out and when he caught her out in the open, she immediately flopped to her back and showed her belly. so she knew the rules and she knew what was going on and that he was trying to let her know who was TOP DOG. i am just saying be prepared for it because it might be a bit more complicated than you expect. oh and also be prepared for each of them to be obsessed with the other's food, thinking it's WAY better than their's.

I read most breeders will give a 2 year guarantee for any serious health problems to give the puppy back. I asked my breeder about the health guarantee and she told me it was 5 years.

These dogs are number 6 in breeds with the possiblity to bloat, which will kill them generally withing 2 hours if not treated. Some vets are now performing a procedure called a gastropectacy (sp?) which is normally performed in an emergency situation when the dog bloats. It's a procedure to the stomach to help prevent it, some people are now doing it as a precautionary measure because once the dog bloats it will be succeptible to further bloat, etc. because of the twisting of the stomach and organs.

My puppy will have this procedure done along with his neutering. All of the puppies will have their full evaluation at 8 weeks for structure, etc. All of these puppies will have all possible tests, papers, pre-paid registration, etc. Everything you would expect for a pure bred dog.

You also have to agree to a raw food diet, these dogs are eating chicken necks and all natural raw food. His diet will consist of a mixture of vegetable (kale, green beans, cauliflower, etc)that is put in a cuisinart and then you add a raw meat, it will vary between chicken, turkey, lamb, beef, venison, etc. so the dog is not always eating the same meat all the time to prevent them getting immunites, sickness, I forget what the deal was with not just feeding them one meat, to the mixture you add salmon oil or fish oil so they get their omega 3 and omega 6.

Dry food and especially dry food mixed with water expand and cause gas and make the dog succeptible to bloat. Dogs who go off a raw diet and to dry, processed food will be very succeptible to bloat. I will be able to make this mixture about once a week and freeze it in measured portions to feed the dog. I will go home with a weeks supply of food for the puppy and then start preparing his food myself.

Thinking about it, dogs were around for a couple of thousand years before processed dog food came out and they did just fine. The ingredients in even the higher line dog foods contain too many things that are not great for dogs.

oh jake, he will love you no matter what! you just have to get used to SHARING! here is a pic of new sister Chanel eyeballing the chewie that her big brother Lucius is chewing on, at close range. She will try to pounce on it the minute he drops it, but he has taught her that even if he isn't chewing it, and it is just laying there on the floor between them, until he decides to pick it back up again, that it is still his!!

Hey, I was a teenager then, and I thought Jones was cute -- but I never, never swooned!

(pass me my smelling salts!) Note that I still remember his last name, didn't even have to look it up.
