In Raw World of Sex Movies, High Definition Could Be a View Too Real

Jesse Jane plans cosmetic surgery to hide imperfections newly visible.

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 21 — The XXX industry has gotten too graphic, even for its own tastes.

Pornography has long helped drive the adoption of new technology, from the printing press to the videocassette. Now pornographic movie studios are staying ahead of the curve by releasing high-definition DVDs.

They have discovered that the technology is sometimes not so sexy. The high-definition format is accentuating imperfections in the actors — from a little extra cellulite on a leg to wrinkles around the eyes.

Hollywood is dealing with similar problems, but they are more pronounced for pornographers, who rely on close-ups and who, because of their quick adoption of the new format, are facing the issue more immediately than mainstream entertainment companies.

Producers are taking steps to hide the imperfections. Some shots are lit differently, while some actors simply are not shot at certain angles, or are getting cosmetic surgery, or seeking expert grooming.

“The biggest problem is razor burn,” said Stormy Daniels, an actress, writer and director.

Ms. Daniels is also a skeptic. “I’m not 100 percent sure why anyone would want to see their porn in HD,” she said.

The technology’s advocates counter that high definition, by making things clearer and crisper, lets viewers feel as close to the action as possible.

The porn industry is not so important that it drives anything. If there were no porn industry the printing press the VCR,DVD ,and other technology would still have come into being.

The porn industry merely uses this technology to make its films, It dosnt drive anything. It isnt that important and those trying to say it is are full of crap.

Wrong. Click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD_DVD and scroll to the "Industry Support" section.

“The biggest problem is razor burn"

Well, that's a relief ... I'd think rug burn or maybe crotch rot.

I can see why porn filmmakers would want to shoot their movies in soft focus. Too explicit here can be too much of a good thing.

That's why erotic scenes in mainstream films are always shot with dim lighting - not only does it hide the actors' imperfections but it more accurately reflects real life psychology. ;)

But really, they should worry less about HD and more about incorporating real plots.

Many people are having second thoughts about HDTV,When they see their home movies showing all their imperfections, they are none to happy. What may be seen as a small mole or any slight deformities, becomes amplified to look like something out of a horror movie!Godzilla looks good though.

In order to display on HD, it must be shot in HD, so unless you're using a 10k camera, you're ok. It will take a while for HD cameras to be household common...

Also when close ups of private parts are seen,it is highly probable many will refrain from sex altogether!!

I can see the consumer asking a salesman what type of camera to buy.My guess would be the newest model at the time.Boy will they be sorry!I have a friend who just recently bought a 52' HDTV and they were sure shocked to see close ups of what was once their favorite stars!I like the fact that even cosmetics can not hide ugly. The glamor effect wore off very quickly to them. Now I have to hear them b!tch and moan about the TV being'too sensitive"!!
