Word For The Day, Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - consanguineous
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | January 17, 2007 | The Janitor

Posted on 01/17/2007 7:23:54 AM PST by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

consanguineous • \kahn-san-GWIN-ee-us\ • adjective

of the same blood or origin; specifically, descended from the same ancestor

Example sentence:

Brent hadn't believed that the man who claimed to be his long-lost cousin was telling the truth, but the documents proved that the two men were consanguineous.

Did you know?
"Consanguineous" is part of a family of "blood" relatives that all descend from the Latin noun "sanguis," meaning "blood." Some of these relatives are found on the literal branch of the family tree, as "exsanguination," a term for the draining or removal of blood. Others are on the figurative side of the family, such as "sanguine," a word that can mean "bloodred" or "ruddy" but that is more often used with the meaning "cheerful" or "optimistic." There is also "sangfroid," a French word (literally meaning "cold blood") that was borrowed into English to refer to self-control under stress. "Consanguineous" relies on the "kinship" sense of "blood," bringing together "sanguis" with the Latin prefix "con-," meaning "with," to form a word used to describe two or more organisms that descend from the same ancestor.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

The validity vel non of the Theory of Evolution is exquisitely demonstrated by the consanguineous relationship of members of the Democrat Party to the species R. rattus.

Glad you made the trip safely. Anyone consanguineous to a Kennedy is guaranteed election in Massachusetts.

Michael Devlin said the boys were just kin o'his
They were sons, they were blood, consanguineous
I don't need all the facts
'bout the unnatural acts

i would say anytime someone is involved with someone that much younger, there are issues, or it is all about sex.

Aren't they both at their physiologic peaks? I think it's obvious what the relationship was about. But it's still creepy.

get over here and talk about Amanda Sorvino. are you saying that is was because of the 15 yr age difference between them that she was endangered?

That is a myth -- the idea that men (boys) are at their peak sexually from 19 to 21. And apparently the Sorvino women have bought into the idea that the ideal relationship for sexual compatibility is one between a woman and a boy. They have shortchanged themselves and have no idea what they are missing out on (as I'm sure you ladies are well aware).

No, I'm saying that the 15 yr age difference is simply indicative of the poor judgment she has used. Of course that is the same poor judgment that led to an affair with the "hired help" who obviously turned out to be not only emotionally and mentally immature, but also apparently deranged.

why is it mythical that women might want a hardbodied young man when they are in their 30s, but yet just accepted as COMMON SENSE that men are looking for the tight butts and perky boobs of a 2o something no matter HOW aged they might be? i am not espousing going after boytoys by any means, but i think it is a relationship bound to fail if it is based purely on a sex act between two people, no matter what their respective ages.

I agree - I have a teen aged son - I love him dearly but can't imagine why anyone would be interested in someone who can't find the trash can.

I think this shows Amanda is emotionally immature. She either doesn't feel adequate enough to sustain a relationship with an adult or she is seeking her youth again. Either way, ick.

Probably going to crack an egg or two here but: If the Shroud of Turin is truly that of Jesus, it would be very interesting to take a sample of the blood upon that material, get the various blood workups/DNA, and then see if there are any people out there with a consanguineous blood flowing thru them... hence having a direct decendant relationship of that lineage.

That is not what I said was mythical. What is mythical is the notion that men reach their sexual peak when they are essentially still boys. The most powerful sexual organ in the body is the brain; in the male human the brain doesn't reach maturity and full functionality until AT LEAST 25.
