WORD FOR THE DAY, TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2007, VULNERABLE
Merriam-Webster | 1/19/07 | Slip 18

Tuesday, January 16, 2007, Tuesday, VULNERABLE

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Subbie Slip has her whip, handcuffs and legcuffs today. Tomorrow I’m bringing in chains, so beware.

The rest of the stuff is locked up in my drawer. I’m just letting all the new students know that we behave as if we were ladies and gentlemen in here. Those two words “as if” can get you an A if you make the subbie laugh.

VULNERABLE

Pronunciation: ‘vul/ner/a/’bal (I think)
Function: adjective
Etymology: Late Latin vulnerabilis, from Latin vulnerare to wound, from vulner-, vulnus wound; probably akin to Latin vellere to pluck, Greek oulE wound

1 : capable of being physically or emotionally wounded
2 : open to attack or damage : ASSAILABLE (vulnerable to criticism)
3 : liable to increased penalties but entitled to increased bonuses after winning a game in contract bridge

You may use all the “vulnerables” you choose, such as “invulnerable,” invulnerabless,” you know, those kinds of words, and you will get a grade.

I have a Band-Aide on my right index finger, so please forgive me if I give you a rotten grade.

(Robt looks (for an) innocent dictioneary.)
Somehow I doubt that you could come up with an expression of innocence, even in a dictionary.

"I" my dear sire, have exorcised (er, exercised) all the innocents (and innodollars) from (er, in) my dictionary.

Yes, we have school buses.............but for a variety of reasons my daughter and her friend down the road do not ride it anymore.

One reason is the time element. The bus that would pick them up gets to my house at 7:20. I pick up the other girl at 7:55........the girls are in the building and I am pulling out of the parking lot as the bus they would have been on is just pulling into the school lot. I don't see a reason for them to be on the bus for more than 45 minutes when I can make the round trip in less than 25. And they are home a full 30 minutes before the bus gets here in the afternoon.

Of course they cancell school here for snow.

I'm not being a grinch about snow - I am just not going to drive the girls to school in it. I won't drive in it, period - not in a Ford Escort. My husband or Becky's mom can take them - they have the 4wheel drive vehicles, I don't.

Looking out the window at the sky right now say snow to me - but it's about 30 degrees too warm for that.

In our little village my kids could walk home faster than they could get here on the bus. We live across a highway and river, they could have taken the bus, but walked. The tioga daughter had asthma, she got a ride, it took me a couple of minutes of my day. The bus would roll through our neighborhood close to an hour later in both cases. Not worth the wait, that's precious homework/play time.

You've got that right!!!!!

The round trip from my house to school is 11 miles, it's too far for them to walk because school is on the highway and there are no shoulders on our road........but to be on the bus for nearly an hour for a 5 mile ride is ridiculous to me.

But what about the important socialization skills the children learn on the bus?

Yes, that's a joke.

Yes, that's a joke.

It better be!!!!!

That is actually another reason my daughter asked last spring to not ride the bus any more. She wouldn't tell me exactly what the problem was, so I had her write a note about why she didn't want to ride the bus. I read her note, and she hasn't been on the bus since. I showed the note to the bus driver the same day as I gave it to the principal.

The problem child is no longer on the bus, nor in the school for that matter, but it's still easier to take them.

Our daughter had asthma, they did not have radios on all the buses, and no cell phones either. I wouldn't allow her on the bus when they no plan in place to handle an emergency. I drove her to and from school since her diagnosis, which was around first grade. She started driving herself in her junior year of high school.

It was on the middle school bus that I learned what pot smelled like. And got to know "Stairway to Heaven" and the Doors.

Pot? LOL, I've got a story. Imagine a village board meeting when one member reeks of pot, and he is sitting next to the police chief. The snickering that went on at that meeting was one of the funniest things I remember about going to them.

Ah, the poor vulnerable people on this thread, crying at the whims of the weather. Up here in the great void, I finally dug out of the 9 inches of snow that fell last Thursday. That was on top of 15 inches that came just before the new year. We have had below zero temperatures for the last week. It is going to finally warm to the twenties today, but the wind is going to bring that "warm" air in so the wind chill will be below zero. The streets are down to packed snow and ice so driving is an adventure and no car is invulnerable to the sliding caused by the ice. The idiots that think four wheel drive allows them to travel at the speed limit have about been eliminated due to skidding through stop signs.

And you all think you have it bad.

I'll take my sanctimonious hat off now and let you all harumph me.

Actually my HS bus wasn't that bad, it was the middle school bus that had its share of miscreants.
