Well, gee, it was only one fatal attack since the last one in 2005. And besides, what business did that little girl have being out their in her backyard anyway? Clearly, it was the little girl's fault she's dead. /sarc.

What's the point of your sarcasm? Neither the article nor anyone in it tries to make it the little girl's fault or said she shouldn't be out in her yard. There's no defense of the dog's owner.

Just saw two pit bulls running loose in our neighborhood when I was walking with our 18 month-old boy. Should be a felony.

Looks like the dog was in distress when the girl aproached it. It does sound like an unfortunate accident and IMO could have happened with any breed of dog. I would say the grave mistake was the mother allowing the child to aproach the animal while hung up in the fence.

And just like her neighbor's dog had done many times before, in an attempt to jump over the fence, it got its collar caught on the chain link.

Never, ever approach an animal in distress if you aren't the owner and even then extreme caution should be exercised.

The dog is now in the custody of Animal Services and will likely be euthanized because it killed someone, Wright said. There will be a hearing during which the owners of the dog will have a chance to defend the animal.

Apparently and 'old problem' taking a new turn here. And sad; a level of adult obliviousness on both sides of the fence and with tragic consequences.

Pit bulls make such wonderful pets, there so harmless and sweet, ask any owner.

Any pit bull I see running loose in my neighborhood is dead, end of story. I'll face the misdemeanor charge of discharging a firearm within city limits and the owner's sob story to the media of what sweet dogs they are. It's worth it to save pain and suffering, and maybe somebody's life.

Pit bulls should be hunted with no bag limit.

I guess I am a sucker for any dog in distress, and I have not ever been bitten (so far anyway). There is a six foot deep drainage ditch behind our house with steep sloping sides. One morning around 4 am we heard this tremendous howling coming from the ditch. I expected the "hound of the Baskervilles", but it turned out to be a male 13 inch Beagle which weighed about 30 pounds. I managed to boost him out on our side of the ditch and kept him a few days until we made contact with his owner across the ditch. He pulled the same stunt a few more times until the owners finally gave him to us after he had ripped down their drapes while they were gone. His name was Killer. We kept him several years until he passed away, but he will always be in our memories, along with a lasting love for stubborn Beagles.

I see no reason for a breed of dog that has the reputation of Pit Bulls. As far as I am concerend owning one should require a license and the dog should be registered as a killer. you ant a nice dog buy one. If you need protection ,buy a gun. Guns dont go off by themselves. guns dont mind being left alone. Guns dont get themselves hung up in fences. Guns dont crap in the yard and they dont need to be fed daily.

Certainly I would got to help any animal in distress, but I wouldnt go near a pit bull without a pistol.

The family wants Amber's death to be a lesson to others about the dangers of dogs. But, they said, they had no reason to think this dog, whose name they did not know, would ever attack their daughter.

They are such sweet loving pets until they kill somebody.

I'm sure the "Pit bulls aren't dangerous" crowd will weigh in on this one, but I came to the conclusion years ago that there is an inverse relationship between IQ and the viciousness of dog breed owned by any particular person. Only idiots own pit bulls. It's a tragedy waiting to occur.

The local news reports said that the little girl had fed and walked the dog on a leash (with the owner's permission) in the past. This story says that the dog had been caught just like this before and she had helped him, just as she did this time.

In addition, the owners helped restrain the dog for Animal Control, who wanted to observe the dog. They have already let Animal Control know that they don't want the dog back.
