Freeper help wanted - car question
Posted on 01/13/2007 3:06:28 PM PST by djf
OK I drove by it three days in a row. Finally, the snow stopped an I was able to read the 4sale sign.
It was a freakin steal. So now it's in my driveway. No pics (yet)
But my question is this: What could/should a fellow do when he's restoring a car? This one is in VERY good shape, I could easily put in on ebay and sell it in hours for much more than I paid.
Is there anything in particular that a guy SHOULDN'T do during a restoration?
The car is:
1966 Chev Impala 327 four door.
Any and all experience/tips with restorations appreciated!!

First, expect to spend more on a restoration than you originally thought.
#1 Take a lot of photos. (This helps greatly with reassembling)
#2 Label all parts
#3 Bag all nuts, bolts, screws and label.
#4 Eliminate any and all Bondo
#5 Avoid parts suppliers like JC Whitney.
#6 Check out a place called "YearOne" on the net.
#7 Join your local Chevy club.
Lots of other tips for the asking. I've restored 6 cars in the last ten years.

No help here just an opinion. I never cared much for the four doors, but the two doors are a beauty.

A smooth sanding and a great paint job.

Thanks! I am anxiously awaiting the weather to get better here, but in the meantime, I've been examining the interior.
The is some surface rust on the interior trim, which should be fairly easy to take care of. But if/when I do that, I will do it all at once.
Probably take it all out, clean it up good and take it to a good paint shop for a baked on enamel of some sort.
The trunk has alot of rust. Also, there are small holes in the fender in front of the rear wheels. I can do engine stuff but never did any body work.
I'm not looking to totally trick it out, just get it to look and drive fine. It's a warm-Sunday-afternoon-at-the-beach car.

My dad had one of those.. nice car... If you restore the car, it better be because you love it, cause you'll never get the money out of it what you put into it. Especially with a 4 door..
If you don't love it.. I'd sell it on eBay, and put the profit into something you do love.
