I know what you mean, and me with my mouth, sometimes lets everyone, near, that I'm from another era.

Good morning everyone. The temp here is about 35 degrees. Lots of rain yesterday, today is wet and cloudy, so far no ice, but is predicted for tonight.

Hi lysie.

We have our 2 y.o. grandson here. He is sitting at the window watching for snowplows.

There have been 2 so far. It's ice they're scraping off, not snow.

Molly, I'm sorry to read about what happened at the church program. It usually takes just a few varmints to destroy what can be really constructive and beneficial to others.

I get to where I begrudge some people on the planet the oxygen they consume. Not a Christian attitude, I know....

We had another disappointment church-visiting today. The minister delivered a dumbed-down sermon about how we are all different and that's what makes the church special. Filled 20-25 minutes with this drivel. I kept thinking "Is this what God want's to have preached in His House? Where is Jesus in this sermon?" I also thought "Does anybody here over the age of 10 not already understand this??"

It was like a junior high sociology class, sheesh.

Then, as the last hymn they sang a song with the tune of "Onward Christian Soldiers" but with different lyrics. We left just before the song started. In fairness the other hymns were fine.

Our quest for a church home continues...

What's the weather like there? I've got a flight into Pittsburgh - then a 2 hour drive to Indiana, PA tonight.

Weather chaneel is predicting ugliness.

Oh gad, that does sound awful. Drivel is the right word. I woke up yesterday thinking about church, the service, and how it's so "me" directed now...despite what they quote from Rick Warren: "It's not about us"...Indeed it is if you listen to the sermon...me, my story, your story, blah, blah...It's all very subjective, and personal...

another episode of what planet/era am I in???

Bit, next time I see Mr. Steyn, I'll take up the rest stop issue with him! He'll no doubt have something witty & colorful to say about it;^))

No subjective stuff where I am going, which is what I appreciate. Last night the homily was in two parts...the first explaining the reason that marriage is a sacrament and how it reflects Christ's love for the church.

The second part was an announcement that we do not "rent out" our church to people who want a large pretty facility in which to get married, that no one can get married at our church until they have gone through the six-month pre-marriage meetings and counseling, and dates for the summer are filling up fast! LOL!

I have been puttering around this afternoon. Mr. Marple and I put away all of the bins, daughter came down to pick up some textbooks she had Amazon ship here, and we are eating light today, so I don't have a lot of cooking to do.

Daughter in law called with some questions about Disney. I am getting SO excited! This is going to be so much fun!

Our sermon last night was on marriage, as well. That is to be expected since we all follow the same scripture.

We didn't get the Not In This Church lecture.
The only time nonparishioners marry in our church is when they are from a neighboring Catholic Church that won't hold more than 150.

I am at my son's. I brought the little tyke home to nap, and napped myself since I can't figure out how to work their televisions. Duh. It's probably simple.

I messed with the remote for a half hour and finally laid down to think about it. An hour and a half later I woke up.

One of the problems we have in this area is that people want to shop for a venue for their weddings. Some want to go to a bigger church with on-site facilities (kitchen, reception hall, parking) like ours. Others want to go to one of the old buildings downtown for the architecture as a backdrop.

Some of the old parishes downtown do rent their churches out because it is a moneymaker for them, and they are poorer parishes.

We don't do it because we don't have to, and because Monsigneur believes that it is unfair to our own parishioners to tell them they can't have a certain date because it has already been booked.

Well, congratulations! I hope you don't have to deal with the baby having medical problems due to his mother's unfortunate drug use. Sometimes those babies have a hard row to hoe.

Good for him! Our church is the biggest of our 'Cluster' Parishes. We all share the same priest. If someone from one of the other smaller churches wants to use our church it is no problem.

#1 just called and said the gs just pinned his opponent, who was 2 years older and much quicker than him. Sometimes the stars line up.

Toby, did they tell you what to expect from this little fellow, his being a crack baby and all?

I have heard that crack babies cry 24/7 until they're thru withdrawal. Please let me know if this is factual.

I hope I do not regret writing this ... for I do not want to sound too wacky .... Har! 'Tis a good way to start ...

Molly, in all the time I have "talked" to you ... listened to you and learned from you, I have never heard you without your indomitable ... ness (?)

Always the constant one, you are ... steady and true. Maybe, for a while, you are tired of being just that for so many ... all the time?

Maybe .... and what our government has been up to lately does not, obviously, help ...

I was thinking, the other day, how amazing it is that, back in the early 1900's Coke actually had cocaine in it ... yes! ... and that females everywhere thought it quite the thing to move about, in scanty-little-thing-a-ma-bobs ... and schooch up to any male available ... dyed their hair BLONDE and shaved off their eyebrows ... and made their lips look like they (the lips) ... were going to take flight ... the men? .... Well they were taking advantage of this, of course ... liking this new era ...

Then the government thought ... enough! .... and passed Prohibition in the hopes this would heal our Nation's sagging morals ... but the skirts got shorter, the cigars bigger ... the tycoons rubbing their hands together in glee and flunkies counting more dimes than they could have ever imagined ...

Fast forward and we are attacked at Pearl Harbor and all the silliness stops until some nuts regroup and claim ... You can not do that ...

And ... Yes, I can. The Constitution tells me so ...

Newspapers were on it or not ... the Chicago Tribune nearly closed .... (we can only hope the same fate waits for the NYT) .... thousands and thousands of lives lost ... then, not too many years later we really did take out millions .... KaBoom! .... hands wrung and sweethearts came home, finally .... which brings us to Korea ..

We were a Nation learning how to paralel park and could not be bothered ... but were up and front for Viet Nam ... ill-informed, thanks to the media which had entered center-stage and led us to Johnson showing us his big fat stomach and scar and abusing his dog, liberating the black community while selling our soldiers down the river ..

On and on Molly ....

I hope you see what I am trying to nudge you to ... which you already know ....

Lasting things, Molly .... through all these times ... Moms testing their kiddos temperatures by placing their cheeks on their forhead ... in the middle of the night, ... a pat to a dog's head beats almost anything ... a cat coming over to you for no reason ... but love ... clean sheets on a line in the backyard ... a freshly picked tomato you grew yourself ... a victory garden and opening the door for one who can't ....

Checking you neighbor and feeding the birds and hoping for Spring ....

I do not know if this time is so very different than the times lived by a farmer's wife .... in the 30's ... without the net ... just trusting in the Lord and humankind ...

pollyanna signing off ...

What a lovely post, illstilbe, and I know just what you are trying to say.

Despite our frustration with the government and especially the democrats, despite the media's attacks on us and the constant bad stuff on TV, life still, in all it's noise, confusion, and beauty...still goes on.

Thanks for the reminder, and a very poetic one, at that!

Hi, illstillbe

Did I ever tell you that my paternal grandmother shot a chicken hawk out of the sky after it snatched one of her chickens?

She made me stand behind her when she was doing it, but I peeked. And witnessed the entire thing. The story will be in my book.
