A Duke University professor resigned from her committee assignments, saying she was upset by the administration's decision to invite two lacrosse players accused of sexual assault back to campus.
"The decision by the university to readmit the students, especially just before a critical judicial decision on the case, is a clear use of corporate power, and a breach, I think, of ethical citizenship," Karla Holloway, an English professor and former dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, wrote to Duke's black faculty caucus.
"Despite our judgments about the prosecutor's own lack of principled conduct, it is not ours to become the judge or subvert the process," she wrote.
Earlier this month, officials at Duke said charged lacrosse players Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann could return to school as students in good standing. They were suspended last year after a woman hired to perform as a stripper at a lacrosse team party accused them of rape and sexual assault. A third player, Dave Evans, graduated the day before he was indicted.
. . . Holloway was one of 88 faculty members at Duke who endorsed an ad last April in the campus newspaper that included anonymous quotes from students discussing racism and sexual assault on Duke's campus. She said she receives angry, racist e-mails attacking her for being among the school's critics.

She quit committees?!! Excuse me while I spray my coffee...
I went to UVA--when it was still conservative. My first-year dorm was near the engineering school. I can't figure out what happened there.
Good to see that she believes in 'innocent until proven guilty'. Well, that's one idiot prof gone form Duke! Wonder how applications and enrollment have been affected by this judicial farce? And the b-ball team has lost its first two conference games!
" what does this charlatan actually know about English Literature????"
I think she teaches "Hooked on Ebonics".
LOL! One hour per week? Man I should have become a college prof - summers off too!
I be hooked on ebonics mother f***er. LOL
I'd hit it.
With a rape charge and civil lawsuit on the pillow the next morning??????
No way!
I got one word to describe her and it ain't pretty....
What a despicable bonehead
To be fair, many professors have limited "walk-in" office hourse -- they expect students to make appointments.
Destroy the humanities and social sciences. Wipe them out.
I doubt the Duke process is to kick kids out of school every time it is alleged they do something wrong.
The "subversion" was kicking the kids out before they were found guilty.
I have to temper that, I guess. If you "knew" someone was a rapist, you would probably not want them to be allowed on campus walking around waiting for their trial. But then you wouldn't want them in the community either, so I guess if they are allowed out on bail then they should be allowed back at school.
No doubt. The average salary at Duke (Google) is ONLY $131,246 (2005). Poor girl is OBVIOUSLY worth MUCH more!! /S
Then they shouldn't have been expelled before a verdict, you foul intellectually fraudulent overpromoted race-baiting twit.
But I mean that in a nice, only slighly smug and condescending way. :-)
And although she is a Professor of English Teaching (what the heck is that?) her office is in the Law School.
Why is a Liberal Arts Prof in the Law School? How are her students expected to find her?
My guess is that she demanded prestigious office space and the only open office that met her standards was in the Law School building.
This kind of petty political garbage is common on campus.
Shes a professor the way Lindsay Lohan is an actress
I most certainly would NOT want to wipe out humanities and social sciences. Although now I'm older, I've gone back to school and have been taking history and lit courses for several years. I love them. But I'm fortunate to go to a small school that still teaches the subject matter instead of trying to impose an idealogy.
It's gone beyond hope. There are no standards anymore, most of the fields are totally politicized.
Besides, if it's enjoyable, it's not academics. It's entertainment.
