Amazing. The wolrd is truly global when a sport that probably isn't top ten in the country can find a way to pay a man $250 million, and still (hopefully) make a profit.

"made more goals" - He was top of the assists table

As for being a good captain, he single-handedly dragged England through their clash against Greece to make the 2002 World Cup.

John Terry spends more time howling at referees than anything else. Suitable captain? Not for me.

Anyway, there's a thread here where a columnist makes the Beckham case much better than I ever could.

Well, I was looking at the La Opinion website..which is the spanish newspaper in LA. That story was the Top 3 stories.....I think he will be huge in LA due to the number of people that came here from elsewhere.

I don't think it would be too far-fetched for Zidane to come out of retirement and play in the MLS, now that Beckham has made the move.

Heck, look at the number of foreigners that are now playing in the NBA and Major League Baseball and the NHL.

Timothy Leiweke, president of the entertainment giant AEG which owns the Galaxy, said people were mistaken if they thought Beckham's signing was about show business.

Lies.

"now that Beckham has made the move"

We watched the Strikers and a few retirees, too. Gordon Banks, Gerd Mueller and Jan Van Bevran(sp?) Yes, those were good times.

Yes, the key is that Beckham brings more than just soccer skills to the market. He has an attractive family and ais a world wide celebrity. I am told by a family member in MLS that he is known for working very hard for his team.

I agree. People were griping when news of the 32 million dollar, 7 year contract for Coach Saban coming to Alabama.

Frankly, I don't understand this celebrity worship at all. Yes I had my favorite teen idols when I was a kid and teenager and there are actors and singers that I like more than others but my life doesn't revolve around their every word and move!
