Class of 2007 to be selected from list of finalists

Paul Tagliabue, Thurman Thomas, Michael Irvin, and Bruce Matthews are among the 17 finalists that will be considered for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame when the Hall's Board of Selectors meets in Miami, Florida on Saturday, February 3, 2007.
Joining these four finalists, are 11 other modern-era players and two players nominated earlier by the Hall of Fame's Senior Committee. The Senior Committee nominees, announced in August 2006, are former Cleveland Browns guard Gene Hickerson and Detroit Lions tight end Charlie Sanders. The other modern-era player finalists include defensive ends Fred Dean and Richard Dent; guards Russ Grimm and Bob Kuechenberg; punter Ray Guy; wide receivers Art Monk and Andre Reed; linebackers Derrick Thomas and Andre Tippett; cornerback Roger Wehrli; and tackle Gary Zimmerman.

The logic of the voters is sometimes very confusing to say the least.
Larry Csonka was a fine back, but I have always wondered if he deserved to be listed among the top tier, as he usually is. I think he averaged 3.9 yards per carry for his career, with about 8000 yards. A lot at that time, but dwarfed by Barry Sanders, Emmett Smith, Jim Brown, etc. Barry Sanders may be the only back who can approach Jim Brown (and I am a huge Cowboy fan, mind you; but Jim Brown and Barry Sander are in a class by themselves.) Sanders gained 15,000 on some terrible teams. To me he might be able to lay legitimate claim to being the best ever.
If Derrick Thomas is elected it's a shame just like Reggie White that someone else will have to accept the honor on his behalf.

the NFL is by far the best run sports league. Players and owners have gotten rich, and fans have gotten consistent entertainment.
compare the NFL to MLB, NHL, or NBA. lockouts, strikes, thugs, drugs. And yet the NFL rolls on, and he should get a lot of credit for that.
yes, there are drugs and steroid problems in the NFL, and some lack-of character personalities, but that is overshadowed by his accomplishments, IMO.

Actually, I was probably too young to have watched it the first time, but I don't remember. I have seen the NFL Films production of it, however. If I recall, Maimi won on a crazy trick play - some kind of catch-and-pitch thing.
Actually, there's nothing Lewis really did. That we know of.

Monk was great. I was at the game in which he broke the record for most consecutive games with a reception (as a New York Jet I might add). They stopped the game and had a nice little ceremony.
They did a hook and ladder play right before the half to pull within 7.
