LONDON (AFP) - An antique earring thought to have belonged to Hollywood legend Marlene Dietrich has been found under an old rollercoaster, bosses at a theme park in north-west England have said.
The German-born actress and cabaret star lost the pearl and gold earring in 1934 while taking a ride on "The Big Dipper" attraction at Blackpool Pleasure Beach during a personal appearance.
The piece of jewellery was unearthed after the site of the old Log Flume lake where the ride once stood was dredged as part of construction work.
"We have compared it (the earring) to pictures taken at the time of her visit and it certainly looks like one of hers," a Blackpool Pleasure Beach spokeswoman said.
"It appears to have withstood the test of time quite well."
Dietrich was invited to the Pleasure Beach by the then managing director, Leonard Thompson.
Her appearance was a major coup for the resort, coming four years after she shot to fame in "The Blue Angel" film, which featured her signature tune "Falling In Love Again".
After losing the earring, Dietrich, who died in 1992 aged 90, wrote to Thompson asking him to scour the 44-acre (18-hectare) fairground, but a search proved fruitless.
As well as the earring, other items discovered in the lake included three sets of false teeth, a glass eye, a bedraggled toupee and a bra.
"It has been a real eye opener as to what people lose when they are having fun," the spokeswoman said.

FWIW, I'm skeptical of the original ownership of the earring. Of course, a ring that originally belonged to a famous actress is a better story than a ring that belonged to a non-famous person.

OK, this is weird.
I heard the song, "Falling In Love Again" on tv, had no idea who sang it, but liked the lyrics, and downloaded it...and it was Marlene Dietrich. I didn't know she sang, so when I was talking to my 82 year old mom on the phone tonight, she said, she thought she sang in a couple films.
Like I said, WEIRD. Hadn't even heard of her for years.
What must her date have gone through?
