Apple introduces iPhone

Capping literally years of speculation on perhaps the most intensely followed unconfirmed product in Apple's history -- and that's saying a lot -- the iPhone has been announced today in collaboration with Cingular. Yeah, we said it: "iPhone," the name the entire free world had all but unanimously christened it from the time it'd been nothing more than a twinkle in Stevie J's eye (comments, Cisco?). Sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch wide touchscreen display with multi-touch support, 2 megapixel cam, 8 GB of storage, Bluetooth with EDR, WiFi, and quadband GSM radio with EDGE -- and amazingly, it somehow runs OS X.

The 4GB iPhone will go out the door in the US as a Cingular exclusive for $499 on a two-year contract, 8GB for $599. Slides from the conference announced these prices.

Sweet, my current Cingular contract ends in June, just in time to upgrade to a new iPhone.

Your point on not having to go through Cingular is well taken. I just confirmed the same through a telecom friend in the industry.

Yeah, but still easily cleaning Apple's clock.

Look at the difference from the start of the keynote: AAPL straight up, RIMM straight down. RIMM and AAPL have been close to each other for a long time, and even swapped places in growth a bit. RIMM's current up shoot is probably related to its lawsuit worries being over. But I wouldn't make any RIMM vs. AAPL judgments until we've seen if this trend that started with the keynote continues.

Anyone know where to find what 3rd party applications would work with the iPhone?

In particular, I'm interested in finding out whether Palm software and FileMaker Pro would work with it. IOW, I would be interested in it if it would duplicate what I do now on my Palm PDA as well as provide phone/internet/e-mail.

I don't care as much about the iPod capabilities.

Oh???? What does Apple Records have to say about that???

Apple (Computer), Inc., won their last lawsuit filed by Apple Records. At this point, the more Apple diversifies in their product lineup, the weaker and weaker Apple Records' arguments become. Once Apple started adding TV shows and movies to iTunes, I think it was over for Apple Records' lawsuits (and with Apple Computer winning the last round of lawsuits, Apple Records' may find it very costly to continue on - I don't know if they had to pay Apple Computer/Inc's legal fees, but if they did, I'm sure it was expensive).

Apple Records needs to bite the bullet and see iTunes as an opportunity for more revenue generation, because right now, they are throwing away good money after bad in these lawsuits.

This device comes with the complete OSX operating system. It will be capable of running, in theory, just about any app that runs on the current Macintosh (barring graphics intensive apps, specialized apps).

That would be the smart thing to do...

Apple "Records" is really "Apple Corps Ltd." so there's no conflict there. Plus Apple (computers) won the trademark lawsuit last year over Apple getting into the music business. According to an earlier agreement, Apple couldn't "use or authorize others to use the Apple Computer Marks on or in connection with physical media delivering pre-recorded content within subsection 1.3(i) or (ii) (such as a compact disc of the Rolling Stones music)." iTunes ain't physical.

Funny thing, the creator of the short sound clip at the heart of the suit that created that agreement changed the clip's name from "Chimes" to "Let it Beep," (a pun on the Beatles' "Let it Be") but Apple's legal department didn't like that. So he then changed it to "sosumi" ("so sue me"), telling Apple's legal department it was a Japanese word. It's still there.

Taking the joke further, the name of the CSS class on Apple's web site that sets the formatting for the legal notice at the bottom of the page is "sosumi."

Apple (Computer), Inc., won their last lawsuit filed by Apple Records.

The Beatles have appealed the ruling, and the next legal round will occur next month. But it is widely speculated that the Beatles will be available on the iTunes Store soon.

Full OSX running Safari in a tiny handheld device capable of communicating over cellular broadband, WiFi, or Bluetooth with an EXTREMLY high-resolution screen and gesture/multi-touch interface. Wow! Wow! WOW!
