Van Halen, Grandmaster Flash, R.E.M., Ronettes and Patti Smith make Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
CLEVELAND — Van Halen made a "jump" into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday along with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., the Ronettes and Patti Smith. A panel of 600 industry experts selected the five artists to be inducted at the annual ceremony, to be held March 12 in New York.
Van Halen was the 1980s hard rock quartet led by guitarist Eddie Van Halen, outrageous lead vocalist David Lee Roth, and later rocker Sammy Hagar, that put out hits such as "Jump" and "Dreams."
R.E.M. was the quintessential indie rock band until breaking through to mass success in the early 1990s with songs like "Losing My Religion."
Grandmaster Flash led the most innovative act in early hip-hop, and the song "The Message" was like a letter from urban America.
Punk rock poet Patti Smith and Phil Spector favorites the Ronettes round out the 2007 class.
To be eligible, artists must have issued a first single or album at least 25 years before nomination.
What make me feel old Grandmaster Flash the Message is 25 year old OMGGG I remember that song LOL!
When is Cheap Trick going to be inducted?? They are pioneers in the realm of the live album.

I'm guessing David Lee Roth would enter with the rest of the group and not Sammy Hagar.
Or does the R&R Hall of Fame not mention individual members when a group gets inducted?
Did both the Roth version *and* Van Hagar make it in? If both, that should be a fun induction ceremony.
Saw 'em once -- L.A. Forum, 1981. Very short and uninspired show. But there were more fine babes in the crowd than at any show I've ever seen.
Boy, the admission requirements are sure low. Who's next, the Cowsills and Donny Osmond?
I loved that song, never got tired of hearing it.
Maybe the Partridge Family and the Brady Kids.
It's kind of weird: the HOF determines which "versions" of bands get in. For example, the Ramones got in, but only the Joey-Dee Dee-Johnny-Marky line-up. C.J. is not in the HOF. Stranger yet, *all* of the Grateful Dead's line-ups, including Vince Welnick, are in. Go figure. I have to imagine Hagar would be part of the induction - he was frontman for at least as long as Roth, and they had lots of commercial success with him.
I saw them at the Boston Garden in 82, (Diver Down), they were awesome.
I tried really, really hard to like that new VH version but I just couldn't. They lost me with him.

Well Donny was a 'little bit rock and roll.'
Weren't The Stooges on the ballot this year? If they were and didn't get in it is a shame.
I liked R.E.M a lot better back when I couldn't understand what Michael Stipe was singing.
Sammy Hagar is not a member of Van Halen. He was just a hired singer.
