How'dya do it?

For this page, tried putting in <a href=http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6236305.stm Opinion polls give Ms Royal a narrow lead over her rival, Interior Minister Nicholas Sarkozy.>, but it didn't function; it only brought up the page. With no space between .stm and Opinion, the page didn't come up.
