Nasty feud over felling of mighty oak: Tenant loses battle to halt cutting of 45-foot-tall tree
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 1/4/7 | Steve Rubenstein

A tree grows in San Francisco no longer, but not before a team of tree surgeons and a small group of neighbors began mixing it up in the middle of 25th Street on Wednesday and four police officers had to be summoned to restore order.

At times, the name calling and nasty language seemed capable of drowning out the roar of the chain saw.

The dispute involved a 45-foot-tall valley oak in the front yard of a small apartment complex on 25th just west of Potrero Avenue. Months ago, the landlord had sought approval to remove it, saying it leaned dangerously and was uprooting nearby concrete.

Theresa Gee, a tenant in the complex for seven years, tried to have the tree designated a city landmark, but the effort never won approval and final permission to cut the tree was granted two weeks ago.

It all came to a head Wednesday morning, when tree surgeon Noah Williams and his team of seven tree cutters arrived and fired up their chain saws. For most of the day, Gee and Williams exchanged harsh words, taunts and, at one point, shoves.

"It's a perfectly nice tree!'' Gee hollered.

"And I'm going to leave you a perfectly nice pile of chips!'' Williams hollered back.

Gee walked across the yard to the base of what was now a 20-foot-high oak tree and began yelling some more. Williams yelled back. The two were nose to nose and then a pair of shoves were exchanged before Williams' assistants and Gee's friends separated them.

"You killed it!'' she screamed, sobbing.

Doesn't anyone find it not surprising that San Fransico requires government permission to cut down a tree ON YOUR OWN PROPERTY?

One officer called his sergeant, was told that the removal was legal and informed Gee and Williams that the tree could come down, which by then it already had.

LOL

"Whoops -- it CAN'T come down! PUT IT BACK UP!"

Theresa Gee, a tenant in the complex...

She'd have a significant rent increase coming her way at the next opportunity if this was one of my properties...

"Theresa Gee, a tenant in the complex for seven years, tried to have the tree designated a city landmark,..."

Typical liberal that is afraid to ever risk ownership in anything and turns to the government to enforce their preferences. Much like those on this board that support smoking bans on privately owned property. Loons, one and all.
