The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

They came running to me, they were hungry and cold. I had not been able to get feed to them because my truck stuck on an icy hill. I took Buck by halter and lead rope, through 2 gates, and a road to the house, the other two followed.

Smart horses, recognize help when they see it :)

Can they stay up at the house until the weather clears up or is there any place for them there?

This is something I've never seen and I've owned this mare 11yrs. She's rearing and bucking and kicking, and ducking her head and running through the shelter. And of course, Farah has Indy running and even very pregnant Friday.

I've seen the link and read about it - I've never been able to watch it. I'm the last person in the world who has dialup.

Lookie here!

Ruby is 22 weeks and 3 days old. 5 months and a little bit.

We went out with the big boys to the Training Day. Shelley did great -- she ran a double and several long blinds. The first time I ran her it was like she had forgotten everything she knew over the Christmas holidays . . . she broke, she wouldn't heel, she lost sight of her marks, she popped every ten feet on the blind . . . but she apparently got all that out of her system on the first run. All the other dogs had similar symptoms of Christmas Layoff -- as the team leader said, "Too much time in front of the TV with the chips and dip . . ."

It was SO cold - just the low 30s, but there was a sharp wind blowing and we were on top of a hill. The dogs didn't care a bit, but we did!

Didn't get any shots of Shelley, because my husband was manning one of the bird stations while I was running her.

She's such a big girl and looks like she's all business in the pictures. Are you training her? Shelley did great then it sounds like. Also sounds like it's awful cold there but somehow you've missed all the snow and ice everyone else has gotten.

Blue has his basic obediance down when he feels like it :) but has had no field training at all yet. I think Bob is going to send him to a trainer this spring but I don't know. He did just get two goose wings (ick) to start working him with.

Yes, there is --- that's why I was concerned to get them up here.

In front of the house is a big corral and a shelter. It is close to the house where I can get their feed and hay to them on foot.

That's when I was sliding the hay down to them on the ice in the driveway. My driveway is straight downhill about 50 yards to the corral.

I was anxious to get them up there where they could shelter and eat well, and so I managed it.

Usually down in that pasture in the valley, they are fine ---- lots of grass and big live-oak groves to shelter under, which serve very well except for the snow/ice storm which we so rarely have.

It caught all of us here off guard.

Words to live by: "Never open the freezer of a dedicated retriever trainer."

Somebody at a choir party opened the freezer to get some ice cubes, and saw the row of poor little stiff mallard feet poking out of the newspapers on the bottom shelf . . .

Ruby has had her first duck wing. She LOVED it . . . at first she was very suspicious, and circled it and barked, and ran in and batted it with a paw and then ran back out. But she soon got it in her mouth, and then she didn't want to give it up!

She may look like she's all business, but she's just a crazy little girl. One thing that she does do, though, is come to me like a shot. . . she's bonded like anything (I think she is grateful to me for rescuing her from that awful two hours in a crate in the bottom of a Midway Express airplane!)

She had her first obedience class last Monday - of course we've been working on our own, and I had a trainer come in for a couple of private sessions. She'll sit (very well), heel (fairly well - but crooked), down (with emphatic hand gestures), and "leave it" (leave a treat on the floor until permitted to pick it up.) And she won't eat her supper until I give her leave (boy was THAT hard - she has such an appetite my husband has nicknamed her "The ShopVac".)

She's a splendid girl, and she's going to have a lot more straight line horsepower than Shelley (not as maneuverable though, Shelley can run rings around her and stop on a dime.)

I'm glad you've got them up at the house now. They are really thankful too I'm sure.

We were supposed to get ice during the week, and when we went to bed on Wednesday night it was sleeting hard, but it stopped within an hour and we didn't get any more. That's the only thing in the way of winter precipitation so far, but in Atlanta ALL our bad snow and ice comes from mid-January to mid-March. So we're just getting started on our winter weather.

There are weather clouds to the south of us, and it's still hovering around the freezing mark all morning . . . don't know what we're going to get.

'Little mallard feet sticking out...'

I remember once when I was in Canada, in a remote northern community, there was a new year's eve party and when I went to the bathroom in this rural house there was a big dead otter in the bathtub.

At first I thought it was a cat that had gone to sleep in the bathrub but then sitting on the john I figured out it was a dead otter. I was very very calm....calm.....

I'll try to get some pictures of Blue tomorrow. I guess I'll just have to learn to live with gross stuff in the freezer :) since Bob's already started it.

Blue has bonded well with Bob, although he does believe he is a house dog first and formost. And they go out every other day or so, weather permitting so Blue can run a few miles.

Bob hasn't given the wings to Blue yet. A friend brought them over a little while ago but then the two of them were on the way out to worm horses and work with CJ. She has developed a major attitude.

I was very surprised. Farah is definately the Grande Dame - and I've never seen her play like that. Poor Indy, my over weight couch potato was huffing and puffing.

I hope you miss all the ice. The temperatures there are bad enough, perhaps they will come up some before rain moves in.

LOL - very very calm would have required several drinks on my part. I think I need a freezer for the barn or one of the sheds that people won't accidently open.
