It is a worldview known as "scientism," the belief that there is no supernatural, only a material world. And it will not countenance any rivals. It is a "jealous god."

Chuck says it well. All religious people understand the value of science. I'm typing this on a computer so, clearly, these science guys know a lot about how the universe works. Who could argue otherwise?
But there are scientists who are horrified that anyone believes in a transcendent God who exists outside the material world. These particular scientists want that concept eliminated. They are afraid, I think, of what a transcendent God means (the material world isn't everything).

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Weinberg told attendees that the world needs to wake up from its long nightmare of religious belief. According to Weinberg, anything that we scientists can do to weaken the hold of religion should be done and may in the end be our greatest contribution to civilization.
What an astonishing statement to come from a man of science. Disrespectful and arrogant- OK, a man of science can be disrespectful and arrogant. But totally lacking in objectivity. He embarrassed himself in front of the world whether he recognizes that or not.
