Dish has a better HD programming package than DirecTV.
Not to be picky but you mean 1080i
Hi Dave!
Thanks again for all the TV help you sent in Freepmail. We did alot of research and still haven't made a purchase but I think we have settled on the Sony 60" SXRD LCOS, although we also saw the 70" at Sony Style and DH thinks that one is pretty sweet.
We have a rather large bonus room so either would be fine. Of course now I simply have to get a new sectional couch and media storage from Pottery Barn and DH must have a Bose surround sound, HD DVD, Sony Play Station 3...We might have to take out a 2nd mortgage to really set it up nice! (Kidding)
We're going to bide our time. Rumor has it prices will be dropping significantly on LCD technology in the near future. Also January seems to bring great prices on televisons just in time for Super Bowl. And we have to get FIOS installed--we have Verizon wireless, phone and FIOS internet, but declined the TV initially--we were locked into the NFL Sunday Ticket on DirecTV. FIOS offers a DVR with which one can view pre-recorded shows on up to 3 different rooms. Nice!
Once we find out if/when DH will return to the front lines of the GWOT this year, we'll have a better idea of when we should pull the trigger. I can live without a new TV as I don't watch much, although my son is into games and it would be cool to have a really large screen to play on...
Well anyway, you've been a big help to us. Enjoy your new TV!!!
Happy New Year!! GG
Wow, we looked at that Samsung at Sam's Club on December 22. Wish we had known it would be marked down--it wasn't our first choice but the price would have made the decision for us!
Please add me to your ping list.
I bought a Sony KDL 40V2500 (40 INCH LCD HDTV 1080P) at Best Buy on Dec. 22 for 2049.99 and 60 days price guarantee. They have since raised the price. I am very satisfied with it and am waiting for the prices to come down a bit before getting a Blu-Ray player.
The warranty ran out this month, but two months ago, a power surge burnt out one of the circuit boards...putting the TV in permanent "stand-by" mode.
The part and labor would have been about $375.
Great television set...other than the weight issue (200 lbs)
I bought a Samsung 50in. 1080p DLP about 2 mos. ago. Switched from Dish to Direct and got the 1080i DVR/Reciever.
The combo is awesome, but some things were not ment tt be seen in HiDef such as Katie Couric's face close up!
The vast majority of movie channels are digital already.
hmmmmm...my 26 inch SONY flat screen shows "1080i" on HD channels and 480i on digital channels.
I took that to mean that's what was being broadcast.
Why 1080p is theoretically better than 1080i
1080i, the former king of the HDTV hill, actually boasts an identical 1,920x1,080 resolution but conveys the images in an interlaced format (the i in 1080i). In a tube-based television, otherwise known as a CRT, 1080i sources get "painted" on the screen sequentially: the odd-numbered lines of resolution appear on your screen first, followed by the even-numbered lines--all within 1/30 of a second. Progressive-scan formats such as 480p, 720p, and 1080p convey all of the lines of resolution sequentially in a single pass, which makes for a smoother, cleaner image, especially with sports and other motion-intensive content. As opposed to tubes, microdisplays (DLP, LCoS, and LCD rear-projection) and other fixed-pixel TVs, including plasma and LCD flat-panel, are inherently progressive in nature, so when the incoming source is interlaced, as 1080i is, they convert it to progressive scan for display.
Thanks for the info--I do have it plugged into a surge protector. One of the many things I like about this TV is the option for different pic modes--on a bright, sunny day when the room is well-lit, "Vivid" mode is great.
Happy new year!
Same to you pharmboy! Happy New Year!
Thanks for the lesson in the differences between 1080i and 1080p. Happy New Year!
You're welcome and a Happy New Year to you and yours.
We had to slightly cut down a shelf in an entertainment center to fit it there, but it's working/looking GREAT!
First thing we watched on it last week was the Stillers losing to the Ravens. < |:(~
" ... it's hard to tell the difference between the regular and HD broadcast."
If you are having a difficult time telling the difference between standard definition and high definition in picture quality then there is something wrong with your setup.
