Linux Question: Wine parameter, to open windows program non-maximized?

Posted on 12/30/2006 2:44:54 PM PST by Cringing Negativism Network

Hi, I'm running into a problem I can't figure a way around, trying to create a "shortcut" (as it were) in Suse Linux, to open a Windows program via Wine.

There's an option in the program itself to not run maximized, which I set. Originally when I installed the program in XP, that program setting was enough to save the size of the window. Windows has a similar parameter when you set up the properties on an icon - Wine seems to default to the equivalent of the Windows "run maximized" icon setting, and opens the window full-screen despite having been set within the program to (not) open maximized.

Is there perhaps a run parameter which needs to go in the command string after the wine call? If anyone knows offhand? I tried googling this one, but got a bunch of posts which didn't seem very related.

Thanks in advance for any advice. Much appreciated. I know it's sort of a boring question, but it's a slow day, and this sometimes is how you learn stuff like this. :)

Thanks!

Maybe the desktop parameter would work for you?

How does wine compare to some of the Windows emulators. Will it run .NET apps?

I've never tried to run a .net app under wine. I use it (via Cedega) to run a couple of windows games I like. I use native Linux apps for everything else.

On the rare occasion I really need windows, I have a VM I run.

What VM do you use, and on what Linux?

We went to Redhat recently, b/c Oracle will support the OS. We'd been having a lot of OS-related problems with Oracle on W2KServer. And, of course, we're all partial to *nix.

But, we've got some .NET apps that I'd rather not have to port, and at least some of them I want to run local to the DB

I currently run VMware on Fedora Core 5, though I DL'ed Parallels Workstation recently. It wouldn't run, or compile (I forget which now). Parallels still has not returned my e-mail regarding that. I may try contacting them again soon.

While I know that Mono is not yet mature, have you tried looking at that for your .net apps? They may run fine on Mono. They may not, and you may have to resort to a VM solution for a while.

What window manager are you using? I don't use WINE for much of anything, because I don't use any non-linux programs anymore. However, if there is a way to specify from the command line that the program not be invoked full-screen, then it should be pretty straightforward to create an icon on your desktop to do the same thing.

Good suggestion, I guess I'm not doing it right, but I tried that - thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks! I gave up on this particular issue after about an hour there, but that's a great resource, which I've bookmarked - thanks for your input.

KDE. Thanks - I finally gave up on this one. :)

Thank you for the feedback.
