MADRID, Dec 30 (Reuters) - A 67-year-old Spanish woman became the world's oldest new mother on Saturday when she gave birth to twins, a Barcelona hospital said.

The woman, who became pregnant after receiving IVF treatment in Latin America, gave birth by caesarean section, a spokeswoman at Hospital de la Santa Creu i San Pau told Reuters.

Both the woman, from the southern Spanish region of Andalucia, and her babies were in good health the hospital said, though she added doctors had put the babies in an incubator.

The unnamed woman who was giving birth for the first time is one year older than Romanian Adriana Iliescu who had a baby girl in January aged 66. She had been pregnant with twins but one died in the womb.

The hospital said it would not disclose the woman's name or the sex of the babies to respect patient confidentiality.

Well, quite a few scriptural characters gave birth in old age. The wondrous miracles continue, and ought to be used in a "South Park" episode.

I would say the ethics of the doctor(s) involved in this case are lacking to say the least.

This woman should not be giving birth at this age.

the probability of birth defects increases after age 35. The long term effect on the health of children of geriatric mothers is certainly unknown.

And chances of the mother seeing her children to adulthood is low.

There's also no mention of a father. Poor kids.

Birth defect risk is related to the age of the egg donor, not the woman who carries the pregnancy. This woman had a much LOWER risk of birth defects than a 40 year old who got pregnant naturally. Prematurity is a greater risk in post-menopausal mothers, but of course it's also a greater risk in overweight, diabetic, and hypertensive women of any age and nobody seems to think they should be barred from having babies.

Personally I wouldn't have a baby a this age, but until every single crack whore and welfare addict on the planet has been sterilized, I'm not going to criticize women who end up waiting until their 60s to have a baby. Many have been forced to wait because they're being taxed to death to support the crack whores and other obviously unfit mothers and all the damaged/abused/neglected babies they produce.
