On Tuesday, former president Gerald R. Ford, Jr. died at the age of 93. He led a full life beginning on July 14, 1913 in Omaha, Nebraska.

The future president was a star athlete and the captain of the Grand Rapids South High School football team. He was offered contracts with the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers but declined so that he could attend Yale Law School. Shortly after his graduation, an outside event changed his plans. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Gerald Ford enlisted in the Navy.



Shortly after returning from the war, Ford decided to run for a seat in the House of Representatives. His 24-year tenure included his rise to the House Minority Leader. After Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned, President Nixon chose Ford to beceome the new vice president. When Nixon himself later resigned, Gerald Ford became the first (and only) person to ever rise to the presidency without ever being elected as president or vice president.


His presidency was notable for not only his pardon of Nixon but, according to many, his restoration of trust in the presidency. President Ford worked hard to ensure that his tenure in the office was open and honest. Later in life, Gerald and Betty Ford moved to their Rancho Mirage home in California. It was there that President Bush visited the couple in April of this year.



On December 26, 2006, Gerald Ford died at his home in Rancho Mirage. Ford will have services in Washington, DC and will be buried at his Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

What are you going to say about it for your thesis?

I'm just happy to see that we're not alone.

I have no idea. I want to write about national security. Maybe I'll write about the effect of spreading democracy on our national security. Hmmm...that could be interesting. I have to talk to my advisor about it when I get back to school.

How many people will be on your committee?

It's undergrad. There's no committee. And it doesn't even have to be that long...maybe 20 pages.

Your advisor should have some ideas. I would think that national security is a popular topic for senior theses in polysci these days.

I'm not sure that really matters for undergrad. And if I go back to DoD, I'd like to use my thesis as part of my application. Or for anywhere else, for that matter.

Would they look at your thesis as part of your application? I had similar thoughts when I was going from college to the job market, but most folks in the real world don't have time to read a thesis when looking at candidates.

Probably not. When I was applying for internships, several places wanted writing samples but most of them had a word limit. But one of the guys I was working with at the DoD said he sent his thesis because it related to the area he wanted to get into...some obscure country whose name I can't remember. The boss I had this past semester would probably want to read it but I don't think I would send it to anyone else.

Will the party in power matter for what you want to do or is your job pretty constant regardless of which party controls the White House?

That was actually one of the appeals of doing my internship at the DoD instead of on the Hill, because it wouldn't make any difference which party is in power. And it's more constant than a staffer job or something like that. Elections don't have any effect on it. But it depends what I actually end up doing. I'm not sure if I can actually get back to the DoD or not. Right now, my goal is simply to work in some kind of politically related job in DC. From there, I'll figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life.

I didn't see any formal show. It's just that so many people buy good stuff here that I can see a great deal from my driveway. About four or five different groups were shooting some nice stuff in places where I could see it easily. It was a nice show.
