I'm very, very, very distantly related to a guy who claimed to be Sobieski's grandson (by that loose standard, you're probably related, too).
It's kind of a sore point on the Genealogy boards, I've found.

I read somewhere that this event--where Christian Europeans managed to defend Vienna from the Muslim Turks--was the origin of croissant. As we know, croissant is shaped like half-moon, the symbol of Islam. I'm not sure if it's true. More likely to be a myth.
In any case, the movie itself would be a big event.

The outcome seems too politically incorrect, and too pro-Western for a mainstream Hollywood production.

Mel should direct but not act, with Polish and Austrian unknowns playing the leads, and all dialogue in Polish, German and Turkish.
Knights of the West throwing the Muslim Janissaries of Suleyman the Magnificent back from the gates of Vienna? I'd pay to see that.

PLEASE.
Sobieski was a real hero. Don't have a wack job like Gibson play him.

If this is made, I WILL GO AND SEE IT.
I hope Mel studies up on tossing and catching his mace behing his back, one of King Jan's favorite tricks.

Mel Gibson is certainly the man to take charge in this project. Let's admit it, he's talented, he got the $$$, he's unPC, and best of all, he's independent from Hollywood.

Good publicity stunt by the director.
All the evidence here is that the producer "approached" Gibson.
Hell, I approached Gibson to donate the the AmishDude fund for benefitting AmishDude. That doesn't mean I'm going to get any money.

They should make this film and also make one about
Charles Martel, who turned back the Muslim hordes at Tours in 732 (call this movie The Hammer). They should also make a film about
Ferdiand the III (call this one El Santo) and the defeat of the last Muslim kingdoms on the Iberian peninsula.
All three films should concentrate on the fact that we didn't go looking for the Muslims to fight them, that they invaded Christian lands and forced the inhabitants to either convert or die. And it should always be emphasized that this conquest included the Holy Lands and all of the "Uma" that borders the Mediterranean. The propaganda that is still being pushed about the Crusades, things like that awful anti-Christian pro-Muslim movie
Kingdom of Heaven, is truly obscene.
We've been fighting these monsters for almost 1400 years. Let's drive them back to their own homeland, the Arabian Peninsula. They can practice their death cult there to their hearts content and just leave the rest of us alone.

Wouldn't Mel alone charge as much ?

Gibsons movies have a ridiculous amount of violence in them, Braveheart was a gore fest and Apocalypto was pretty much obscene.
Love Mel Gibson movies.
