CHRISTMAS
STORIES

Tim Burton's holiday classic, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (1993), makes a return to the big screen each holiday season. The dazzling new make-over of the musical-fantasy was led by writer/producer Tim Burton and the technical wizards at Industrial Light + Magic.

Audiences will get closer than ever to Halloweentown's beloved Pumpkin King, Jack Skellington, as he attempts to take over the Christmas holiday. Against the advice of Sally, a lonely rag doll who has feelings for him, Jack enlists three mischievous trick-or-treaters – Lock, Shock, and Barrel – to help him kidnap Santa Claus. Jack eventually realizes his mistake but has to contend with the evil Oogie Boogie before he can make things right and restore the Christmas holiday. Fueled by an unforgettable soundtrack featuring ten ghoulishly delightful songs by Danny Elfman who also provided the singing voice for Jack.

A CHRISTMAS STORY (1985) is humorist Jean Shepard's vignette-laden, nostalgic view of Christmastime in Indiana during the 1940s.

The main story involves nine-year-old Ralphie, who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas -- and is waging an all-out campaign to convince his reluctant parents that the toy will be safe in his hands. Meanwhile, Ralphie prepares for the big day with his rather idiosyncratic family. For example, his brother has a strange relationship with food, and his dad is obsessed with a crossword puzzle contest. But the most important question of all is...when Christmas Day arrives, will Ralphie be the proud (and careful) owner of a Red Ryder BB Gun?

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946) George Bailey has so many problems he is thinking about ending it all - and it's Christmas ! As the angels discuss George, we see his life in flashback. As George is about to jump from a bridge, he ends up rescuing his guardian angel, Clarence. Clarence then shows George what his town would have looked like if it hadn't been for all his good deeds over the years. Will Clarence be able to convince George to return to his family and forget about suicide ?

Thanks.. she is healthy actually. Like me (or me, like her) we have back/orthopedic problems & sinus/allergy primarily...and we both have a hearing loss

she has a very sharp mind still & so despite being bed ridden she is still "there"

Thank you for that - strange really the only time I really thought about her was when I got myself the Christmas morning cup of coffee.

A tradition we had for a few years on Christmas morning whilst preparing the dinner was to have a freshly made filter coffee, sometimes one of those individual ones and then later from the coffee maker.

Dad bought me a coffee maker for my birthday and although I have used the filter feature many times I had not used the espresso and frothy milk bit. I did that for the first time on Christmas Day and toasted mum, she would have loved this machine.

I suppose because of her illness - dementia I lost the real mum a long time ago I only really think of her when doing or eating certain things, the day to day mum went a long time ago.

This is a pix of snugs parents (from a thread I did on her).. there is actually an error here. She died in the wee hours of Christmas Day. but due to the 5 hour time difference, I keep thinking it was Chritmas Eve.

I will correct this pix for the thread (easy to do...now that I know the info correctly)

Strange how certain smells and sounds can trigger memories. A bowl of porridge in the morning reminds me of my mom.

Did you just see on DRUDGE Prince Harry looks like he will be going to Iraq.

Good for him I say. Glad he did not have strings pulled to skirt the assignment.

Martha from what I heard, it was almost the other way around. Many in "high" places I heard wanted to give him a cushy post but he insisted he do his duty & go to war.

Perhaps Eleanor has more info that we do.. of course we KNOW how accurate the media is in it's reporting, esp on the war.

Its a 3 in 1 machine. The left hand side is a conventional filter machine and the right hand side makes espresso and also have steam facility so that you can make frothy cappuccino from the espresso coffee.

I think it was a foregone conclusion once he joined up he would go to either Iraq or Afghanistan. I am sure his unit knew once he joined them they would get one of the 2 postings.

Royals have a military tradition including participating in actual conflict.
