CHRISTMAS STORIES
Tim Burton's holiday classic, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (1993), makes a return to the big screen each holiday season. The dazzling new make-over of the musical-fantasy was led by writer/producer Tim Burton and the technical wizards at Industrial Light + Magic.
Audiences will get closer than ever to Halloweentown's beloved Pumpkin King, Jack Skellington, as he attempts to take over the Christmas holiday. Against the advice of Sally, a lonely rag doll who has feelings for him, Jack enlists three mischievous trick-or-treaters Lock, Shock, and Barrel to help him kidnap Santa Claus. Jack eventually realizes his mistake but has to contend with the evil Oogie Boogie before he can make things right and restore the Christmas holiday. Fueled by an unforgettable soundtrack featuring ten ghoulishly delightful songs by Danny Elfman who also provided the singing voice for Jack.
A CHRISTMAS STORY (1985) is humorist Jean Shepard's vignette-laden, nostalgic view of Christmastime in Indiana during the 1940s.
The main story involves nine-year-old Ralphie, who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas -- and is waging an all-out campaign to convince his reluctant parents that the toy will be safe in his hands. Meanwhile, Ralphie prepares for the big day with his rather idiosyncratic family. For example, his brother has a strange relationship with food, and his dad is obsessed with a crossword puzzle contest. But the most important question of all is...when Christmas Day arrives, will Ralphie be the proud (and careful) owner of a Red Ryder BB Gun?
ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946) George Bailey has so many problems he is thinking about ending it all - and it's Christmas ! As the angels discuss George, we see his life in flashback. As George is about to jump from a bridge, he ends up rescuing his guardian angel, Clarence. Clarence then shows George what his town would have looked like if it hadn't been for all his good deeds over the years. Will Clarence be able to convince George to return to his family and forget about suicide ?

No..not at all...Just stating a few facts of life and of physics.
Believe me...I AM VERY thankful just to be able to even be here for this Christmas after last Sunday night. God had his "invincible guardian angels" there once again, to keep me safe.

We went to Church this morning, and then to my uncles to celebrate Christmas. All in all--it was not a bad day.
(We did it today and not tomorrow (today now) because my Cousin John could not have his kids tomorrow, and so it was best to do it on Christmas eve, when we were all there.)

Also.....
If this vehicle, which would have to weigh at least 860 kilotons, were to even try and stop on ANY roof in ANY country, it would collapse the building flatter than any demolition crew ever could.
And--trying to accelerate to about 400,000 MPH from a stop in the atmospehere would produce such a big plow wave behind such a large, heavy vehicle, that the plow wave would destroy EVERY structure in probably a mile radius from the sled.

CHRISTMAS DAY P-I-N-G
Matthew 1: NIV
18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us."
24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.
25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

from GailA at the FinestRULES FOR CHRISTMAS CELEBRATING
1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.
2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. it's rare. You can't find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!
3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.
4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission. |
5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?
6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.
7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.
8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?
9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.
10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.
Remember this motto to live by: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

Great fun - turkey is in oven. I have just figured out my coffee maker to make a cup of cappucino and am about to have another one.
This was mum's and mine tradition on Christmas morning to have coffee with real cream today I am using full fat milk but frothed in the coffee maker.
Have to smile at rule 9 fruit cake or more correctly Christmas cake in Britain is very popular seems more popular than your fruit cake.
Maybe I will cut or more acurately chissel the Christmas cake later today the icing has gone rock hard.
As it is made with egg white and sugar and made with electric whisk I should have expected this after all it is egg white that was used on old oil painting to set the colours.

some fruitcakes are better than others to me.. the ones with a lot of Peel & citron are not appealing but the ones with a lot of nuts, cherries, REAL FRUIT(not skins)& with a good batter are great.
When I was in high school we sold Texas Fruit Cakes for the music program. they were very expensive & very good. I guess that is the bar for me, I have never had fruitcake as good as that.
I have never made any. I would love to do some more scratch cooking eventually...if ever my life gets easier.

I am finally going to try to watch A Christmas Story tonight.
I bought the DVD at the house when I got Martha's ornament. I have never seen it..the museum/gift shop & the house are really neat. In area Tremont a up & coming trendy area that was slummy a few decades ago. The back of the house drops into the "industrial flats".. a very large expanse of the Cuyahoga Valley that has the steel mills, refineries etc. So overall this would NOT be considered a "high rent" area!
My original intent in doing this thread was to focus primarily on the movie/house etc as I have a LOT of pix from my day there. BUT, the Finest thread which I had allotted 4 hours to prepare/post took 22 hours .. and no sleep that night. so this one got a quick job.. maybe later tonight I will post my pix from the house/area.
