CHRISTMAS
STORIES

Tim Burton's holiday classic, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (1993), makes a return to the big screen each holiday season. The dazzling new make-over of the musical-fantasy was led by writer/producer Tim Burton and the technical wizards at Industrial Light + Magic.

Audiences will get closer than ever to Halloweentown's beloved Pumpkin King, Jack Skellington, as he attempts to take over the Christmas holiday. Against the advice of Sally, a lonely rag doll who has feelings for him, Jack enlists three mischievous trick-or-treaters – Lock, Shock, and Barrel – to help him kidnap Santa Claus. Jack eventually realizes his mistake but has to contend with the evil Oogie Boogie before he can make things right and restore the Christmas holiday. Fueled by an unforgettable soundtrack featuring ten ghoulishly delightful songs by Danny Elfman who also provided the singing voice for Jack.

A CHRISTMAS STORY (1985) is humorist Jean Shepard's vignette-laden, nostalgic view of Christmastime in Indiana during the 1940s.

The main story involves nine-year-old Ralphie, who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas -- and is waging an all-out campaign to convince his reluctant parents that the toy will be safe in his hands. Meanwhile, Ralphie prepares for the big day with his rather idiosyncratic family. For example, his brother has a strange relationship with food, and his dad is obsessed with a crossword puzzle contest. But the most important question of all is...when Christmas Day arrives, will Ralphie be the proud (and careful) owner of a Red Ryder BB Gun?

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946) George Bailey has so many problems he is thinking about ending it all - and it's Christmas ! As the angels discuss George, we see his life in flashback. As George is about to jump from a bridge, he ends up rescuing his guardian angel, Clarence. Clarence then shows George what his town would have looked like if it hadn't been for all his good deeds over the years. Will Clarence be able to convince George to return to his family and forget about suicide ?

Very nice! I only take issue with the last part of #3: "don't sleep all you want." Humph.

Quit messing around in little steps. Move to Antartica and be done with it...

We all have our favourite Christmas movie or story my favourite movie is a fairly new one as far as movies go as it was released in 1994.

Olivia Newton John plays a lady called Julia who has major financial problems which were made worse by the death of her husband two years previously. She has two daughters, lives in the mountains surrounded by farm animals. Gregory Harrison plays Brian a banker from the city who arrives to advise Julia that unless she pays her rent she will be evicted.

It may not be that well known compared with other Chritmas movies but it is a touching story of a lady and her daughters and a city banker who goes out to her home to give her the above bad news and gets involved in a car accident due to bad weather and ends us spending Chirtmas with the family. He ends up falling in love and eventually there is a happy ending.

I am not sure if this has been released on DVD in the States but it has in Europe and it certainly is one of my favourites. Click here for an excellent review of the film.

Yesterday was the last day at work before the New Year as with most offices and engineering/manufacturing companies we do not open again until after the new year.

In Britain we get as public holidays Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day the other time in between we have to take off our annual holiday allowance.

The company pay for us to attend a Christmas Party (dinner/dance) at a local hotel, also if you have been at the company 10 or more years you get 3 days pay as a Christmas Bonus. They also lay on drinks and nibbles on the last day.

Following are a few photos of this year's drinks and nibbles

Me on the left with our Human Resouces director in the middle and the partner of our buyer (Ann) on the far right.

The nibbles

Donna our Receptionis got permission to bring her young son in on the last day - he is such a sweetie I think most of us look forward to this

Here he is playing on the computer

After our party everyone mucks in and tidies up well that is not quite true it is mainly the Directors that do it as they see it as a thank you to the staff for their hard work all the year.

Even our cleaner Mary gets a hand in vacuming - it has become a tradition for the Company Secretary who until he semi retired was also our Finance Director to give her a hand

I don't have any relatives that much younger than me, except 4 cousins on my mother's side, 2 of which I've never met, but such is the price of being out of contact with your family.
