BETHALTO, Ill. -- Some women at a tavern near this Metro East community took playing with their food to a new level last week by wrestling in mashed potatoes, and now the bar's owner is in hot legal water.
Rhonda Cato, 48, was charged Monday with misdemeanor obscenity and violating the liquor code after what happened last Thursday at the Palace Tavern, where authorities say patrons grappled in a shallow, inflatable children's pool filled with mashed spuds.
Cato, of Wood River, was charged because female participants allegedly pulled up each others' shirts as about 30 to 40 people watched during matches staged while the tavern's doors were locked, Madison County sheriff's Lt. Brad Wells said.
``Basically, the clothing on the female bar patrons was being removed,'' Wells said.
The tavern could be fined $1,000, lose its liquor license or have it suspended for up to 30 days if it's determined that the liquor license code was violated.
The event was not advertised publicly but was billed on a dry-erase board at the bar, Wells said.
The wrestlers could also face criminal charges, he said.
Calls to the Palace Tavern on Tuesday morning went unanswered. Efforts to find a listed home telephone number for Cato were unsuccessful.
Cato is free on $100 bond.
Why? Did he fail to provide butter and sour cream?
I was thinking gravy.
I'd never heard of mashed potato wrestling before (hmmm, were they instant or real?) but I imagine that the removal of the clothing of the female patrons was the whole point.
But now they're busted. Well, damn. And I'm headed to that part of the country for Christmas too. Always a day late and a dollar short.
We got rules here, boy!
Looked through my vast porn collection and can't find a single pic of nude women wrestling in mashed potatoes.
Rice - yes
Broccoli - yes
Stewed Tomatoes - yes
No mashed potatoes.
My collection is now complete!

Rhonda CatoMADISON COUNTY Four scantily clad women who wrestled in a swimming pool filled with mashed potatoes have whipped up a legal mess for a bar owner here, police said Monday.
Rhonda Cato has been cited with a misdemeanor charge of obscenity and with a liquor license violation for Thursday's performance at the Palace Tavern, 5150 Illinois Route 140.
The wrestling match turned raunchy when the women pulled up each others' shirts, said Lt. Brad Wells of the Madison County sheriff's office.
Police say Cato, 48, locked the door to the tavern during the match, which took place in an inflatable children's swimming pool filled with the mashed spuds. About 40 people watched, Wells said.
The partial nudity violated the terms of Cato's liquor license, as well as obscenity rules, Wells said.
The only advertisement for the event was a message on a dry-erase board at the bar, Wells said. The wrestlers could face criminal charges, he said.
Cato, of the 200 block of Jennings Avenue in Wood River, was arrested and cited Friday after someone tipped off police. She posted $100 bail.
A woman who answered the phone at the bar Monday said the allegations against Cato had been "blown out of proportion."
It saddens me when I think that this is what our law enforcement focuses on.
Sorry for the delayed post. Got lost in a potato(e) search:)
