Okay, here it is:
Girlfriend is a budding pastry chef, who made a subtle hint yesterday about wanting a Mixmaster. I'm thinking "thats no big deal, what the hell?" So, I go up to Amazon, and theres all these colors, and all these freakin attachments, and DAMN that thing is expensive!! I thought I was going to get away cheap on this deal, ya know?
So, you owners of these things, what is so great about them anyway, and what attachments should I buy with the thing, and what freaking COLOR and, and, and, by the time I'm ready to buy, should I just give her the cash?
Why is this thing so much more expensive then the other brands? Does food taste better with this thing? Is this some female status symbol or something? I could buy a lot of man stuff with that money, so ladies, tell me what's so great about this sucker, before I get her a gift certificate instead!
Isn't that what we're talking about? It sure looks like my mixer (mine's not red, though)--You can get them at Lowe's these days.
How many fingers do you see? LOL. :-)
As to color, what color is her kitchen? Personally, I would recommend either the silver or the white because that will outlast color fads.
BTW, just so you know, my father bought my mother a Sunbeam Mixmaster in the 40's and I'm still using it today.
When you heard it whirring away, you knew you were in for something good.
It took care of our family of eight quite well.
Well, I've destroyed two, but I'm not going to say how long they lasted...
8 carat CZ.
$9.42, ya tightwad.
A month ago I would have sung the praises of this item. Now, however, I can tell you its weakest link is the peg where you attach the beaters. There's a little spring-loaded catch in there and if it gets goofed up the whole mixer is just a cool sculpture for the kitchen counter. I know from sad experience that neither a hammer nor WD-40 could save mine. (Pout)
That said -- it if's working right, it's a great machine. Has a great big motor so it can mix and knead bread dough in about 5 minutes. I guess now DH could use that motor to run fans in the cow barn.
I used mine for breads, rolls, pizza dough, cookies -- all sorts; mashed potatoes, cakes, pie crust, biscuits, angel cake and about 100 cakes and batches of icing for DD's 4-H projects.
Good basic fittings are a flat beater; dough hook; and wire whip for meringues and angel cakes; as well as the plastic rim with a spout as pictured.
Mine is red, but it was a gift. White or ivory would have matched my other appliances.
I sure miss that thing but soldier on and mix up the regular Saturday night pizza dough by hand. Probably soon to be delegated to DD.
Good luck. Hope that all helps.

Extra mixing bowl? Okay thanks.
still can, this can be painted any color you want
Extra mixing bowl!
Sure there is such a thing. It's a piece of junk that was sent back to the factory because it was a piece of junk when they sold it the first time.
Why don't you just buy her the basic mixer this Christmas, and then buy her accessories for her birthday, holidays, etc., next year?
Since she's a budding pastry chef, she can probably forego things like the meat grinder, the ice cream maker, the pasta maker, etc., right off the bat. Make sure you get the hook, though (I think it might come with the basic unit), because a pastry chef is going to need that.
I bought one of those things for my wife seven or eight years ago and she's only used it once AFAIK, lol! It just sits on the counter looking pretty and collecting dust.
Does buying this thing suggest anything that could hint at commitment? I don't want anyone getting the wrong idea. When I read you've had one for 15 years, that scared me.
Thanks for calling attention to that Paulat.
LEL...BWHAHAHAHHAHA!!!!
Sick & demented tagline. Kissy
I've had mine for 27 years and it is still going strong. Although I have several attachments, the only one I have used is the grater. There are times when I think an extra bowl would be nice to have, but that's mostly at Christmas time when I do more baking. Color wise, there are so many to choose from, I might let her pick that. I had no choice when I got mine, it was white or white.
I'm completely certain that you're the unfortunate young lady who has been cursed with the only two defective KitchenAid machines in the history of mankind.
My machine is now working for my second and final wife. We've been married seven years, I was married to the first for 10, and I got it as a present when I married the first time. Not that she ever used it, but I digress.
My mother just had to replace her KitchenAid last year and it was the same one she had when I was in Jr. High.
KitchenAid is one of the few manufacturers that still makes a very high quality product for a fair (not cheap, but fair) price.
If I had to buy a new one, I'd want one like Alton Brown has with the flames on the side....
