Get her the Mixmaster it's worth it. It's a once in a lifetime purchase especially for a serious cook. If you can't afford all the attachments, just the mixer will be fine (you can buy attachments for other occasions).

As to color, what color is her kitchen? Personally, I would recommend either the silver or the white because that will outlast color fads.

BTW, just so you know, my father bought my mother a Sunbeam Mixmaster in the 40's and I'm still using it today.
